If you thought professional video autobiographies were reserved only for the elite and wealthy…you were right…up until recently.

You used to only have a few options to record your loved one’s life story on video. You could hire a company that creates a DVD about your loved one, but at a very high price- ranging in the hundreds to thousands of dollars. Or, you could flip out your iPhone and get a so-so quality video of your loved one answering questions about their life.

But now there’s another way. Now you don’t have to break the bank AND you can have a professional video life history for you and your entire family.

The new free service is called Lifey.

Lifey is a project I felt inspired to create about a year ago. In a nutshell, Lifey aims to help tens of thousands of families preserve and share their most meaningful life experiences and insights.

After conducting more than 800 in-depth video interviews for our Prepare to Serve LDS mission project, we developed a more efficient process for recording and sharing video interview-style content. This new process allows us to produce a 2-3 hour video life history with only about one hour of labor. Whereas a video autobiography used to take an entire day or week to produce, we can now produce video autobiographies in only an hour or two. And our video autobiographies can be much longer than the traditional DVD format- we’ve created Lifeys that range from one to six hours long.

We began our service a few months ago and so far we’ve created about 40 Lifeys. We intend to create thousands of more free Lifeys in the coming years.

We currently have only one full-time Lifey center located in Provo, Utah, but we have plans to expand our service to people located anywhere in the world.
