Many years ago we visited a neighbor's home during the Christmas holidays. Their passion was collecting nativities from all over the world. It moved us so deeply and we felt the Spirit so strongly in their home, we decided then and there we would start collecting nativities in our own world travels. Joseph and Emma would not have a house they could call home until their 10th move into a lovely home just about 300 feet from the Kirtland Temple. The home, however, that Emma loved the most was the Mansion House in Nauvoo where Joseph only lived for 10 months before he was killed by a mob. Welcome to the beautiful homes where Joseph and Emma lived in Nauvoo and a place where Joseph revealed one of the most significant revelations of the dispensation.
We have been thrilled beyond words since the announcement about the Kirtland Temple and other significant historical properties. President M. Russell Ballard said, "If we ever lose sight of our forefathers and those who made it possible for us to have what we have, we will have lost something that is irreplaceable.” In keeping with that admonition, we have pulled out some of our photographs of the Kirtland Temple and captioned them with quotes and facts from the glorious time of the dedication so that you can become familiar with this, one of the crown jewels of the Church of Jesus Christ.
We can scarcely imagine the shock and sorrow of that fateful Thursday afternoon, June 27, 1844 (179 years ago today) when Joseph and Hyrum were killed by a ruthless mob. I have gathered some of my photographs and some of the accounts of those who were there or were in Nauvoo to try to piece those feelings together on this day of commemoration. Come and see.
It is only a building in Evermore Park in Pleasant Grove Utah, but when we walked in, suddenly we were in Nazi Germany. Noted film maker T.C. Christensen and crew had transformed the building interior into a train station, with Nazi flags flying ominously.
It has commanded the landscape for some time, and from our home across the valley, we watched the Saratoga Springs Utah temple arise. Yet, one has to move closer to begin to recognize its stunning scope, its majestic and serene presence, its holiness as it stands surrounded by Utah Lake and Mt. Timpanogos.
For our people, only two other places compare in sacred significance to this place, namely Adam-ondi-Ahman and Jerusalem. Today I take you, in beautiful photographs, as if with the young boy Joseph, into the Sacred Grove. I encourage you to gather your spouse, your children or grandchildren, your roommate or some friends around the computer screen and read and discuss the captions one-by-one together.
"Why would you want to visit Auschwitz?" our friend asked us. We went because we couldn't help but go. We went to remember how prejudice explodes into hate and butchery. Come with us on this 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
It was indeed an evening in Rome never to forget. Seven of the senior leadership of the Church gathered to be with the youth of the new Rome Italy Temple district. President M.
