When I first picked up The Law of Love by Steve Young, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised at what a delight this book was! If you love football, General Conference, or strengthening your relationships, this is the perfect book for you. Drawing on his many unique life experiences, Young shares a lifetime of knowledge on how to love bigger.

Much of The Law of Love focuses on unconditional love following a “higher law,” which, according to Young, means to love without the expectation of getting something out of it. A lot of what the author discusses in his book reminded me of last General Conference, so this book is rather timely and much needed! The message is clear: every situation can be bettered by love.

My favorite part of the book was when Steve Young shares his experience of starting in the NFL and he struggles with being the replacement quarterback. Everyone is comparing him to Joe Montana, and his team is not doing well. Steve happens to sit by Stephen Covey on a plane, and Covey listens to his struggles. Covey then says that he works with many people who are trying to see how good they can get, and that Steve Young had an amazing opportunity to see how good he can really be. Steve takes this to heart and eventually goes on to win a Super Bowl and become the NFL MVP.

This struck me because this truly is what life is about, how “good” we can be. How much like the Savior we can be. How much we can love those around us. The Law of Love, the author says, can even work backward as we apply the Atonement in our lives, change our pasts, and better our future. “When I have to clear away everything else, I take it right down to the core. And what’s at the core? It’s the law of love.”

I highly recommend this inspirational and life-changing book!
