I became a blood donor in 1973 when the call went out at the Presidio of Monterey due to a car accident nearby. Since I have a rare type (AB+) I began to donate regularly. Now 70, I am now closing in on 20 gallons of whole blood. It is uncomfortable at first, but that can be overcome with repeated donations and learning to relax. To me, it is a service many people can render, but few do. It is especially rewarding to me because I am giving something of myself.

I saw that challenge on Sunday, the 1st, and thought, "oh good, I'm lucky to be able to give blood." Then I realized I just donated 5 weeks ago, and have to wait a bit. I love to perform this small act of service, knowing that I can make a real difference. If you can, do it! If you don't know, find out if you can. If you can't, encourage others to give. There is always a need.
