Great article! Never heard of this speech before. Wonder why it's never mentioned??? Thank you for increasing my families knowledge on Church history. There are some really important points that Brother Rigdon makes. I am so grateful to be part of this Church and for the love, forgiveness and tolerance that exists in the hearts of its members. Grateful to be one of the fold.

Independence Day should be celebrated as much in our Church as Christmas and Easter. Few there are that understand the connection between America and God.

This truly is a gem for new converts who are constantly searching for more understanding of church history. Sidney Rigdon's speech puts into perspective the issues of the early saints who gave it all for the truths of the restored gospel. These early pioneers are such a testimony of the sacrifices these Saints willingly made to be free. They tried to avoid confrontations to practice their religion in a country who professed freedom of religion yet vilified those of different religions. Those who persecuted the Saints truly knew not what they do, nor understood prophetic revelations of God's prophet meant for all mankind. I so appreciate these glimpses into our history to give us greater understanding of the tribulations of our ancestors.

I really like these published pieces of Church History. Each one improves our understanding of the time in which the Gospel was restored. We gradually gain a composite mental picture which enables us to empathise with ideas and statements that seem to us in the first part of the 21st century to sometimes be contrary to the teachings of the church that we embrace today. We find that the statement 'Line upon line, precept upon precept' really does apply to the Restoration. More gems like this one please for those of us who do not have the time to do our own, thorough, researches.
