Philip A. Harrison was raised in Provo, Utah. He was married to Kathy Francis for almost 29 years before her death from heart disease. Phil and Kathy are the parents of five children. In keeping with family academic traditions, Phil graduated from BYU with bachelors and masters degrees in botany. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in Athens, also in botany, with an emphasis in plant physiology. He currently conducts research on plant storage carbohydrates.Following graduate school, Phil and Kathy lived in upstate New York and California before returning to Utah, where for 15 years they led workshops in the “Inner Peace through Self-Mastery” program (an LDS adaptation of Recovery Inc., a cognitive therapy approach to emotional health). Kathy had 25 years of experience in Twelve Step work, and died only 5 months after discovering an LDS-oriented adaptation of the Twelve Step program, Heart t’ Heart. Following Kathy’s passing, Phil married Colleen, Heart t’ Heart’s founder and author of He Did Deliver Me from Bondage, herself a mother of 12 children.A life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Phil served a mission to Germany and has taught priesthood classes, gospel doctrine, family relations and teen classes in Sunday school. He served as elders quorum president in Georgia, New York and California, and has directed ward and stake choirs. He is currently the high priests group leader in his ward.
