Historic Retailer of Handmade Goods Locates at This is the Place Heritage Park
Deseret Book Company, owner of Mormon Handicraft has announced that it will open a new Mormon Handicraft retail location, occupying existing space at This is the Place Heritage Park. The store opens September 3, 2004.
Mormon Handicraft will occupy the existing Visitors’ Center building at the entrance to the Park. This is a non-fee area of the Park; admission is not required for the Mormon Handicraft store and parking is free. The main floor of the building will provide finished handmade goods and souvenirs while the second floor becomes a fabric shop, crafts space and classroom location. Mormon Handicraft offers dozens of sewing, quilting and craft classes throughout the year. The basement level will continue to house public restrooms for Park visitors, a small movie theater, and additional classroom space.
The downtown Salt Lake City Mormon Handicraft store (15 W. South Temple) will close on Saturday, August 28 (with all merchandise shifting to the new Park location) and will be reopened by October 1 as a Deseret Book Christmas Store. The temporary retail store will feature selected handmade goods and holiday gift items, as well as seasonal books and entertainment products during the Holiday season.
Mormon Handicraft carries two main product lines: Mormon Handicraft Classics—the traditional handmade products and gifts dedicated to the preservation of handmade crafts and fabric arts—and Mormon Handicraft Home—offering contemporary products to match today’s lifestyles and home décor.
Visitors to the Park location of Mormon Handicraft will also experience greater choices in handmade greeting cards and stationery, candles, sweets and treats (including the Lion House Pantry), and pioneer crafts. The new retail location will continue to sell books and souvenirs currently sold in the “This Is the Place” gift shop.
Mormon Handicraft was founded in 1937 during the Great Depression to allow women to earn money while still tending to home and family. It celebrates the richness and diversity found in the pioneering experience. Mormon Handicraft continues to encourage home industry and the preservation of pioneer skills and crafts.
