Or, maybe to Mormon the date was obvious. The scriptures tend to present certain things indirectly, the date of the visitation is not stated flat-out, but must be inferred from the details. It sounds like one of the "pilgrimage festivals," when the people gathered to the temples, perhaps the Day of Atonement, in the fall of the year.
