As we love and revere all of the Lord’s chosen leaders, we look back with a little humor as we think about many recent General Conferences. We looked forward to announcements of new temples and instruction and counsel from Elder Holland. My husband first met him when they served at the Institute at the University of Washington. As Jeff was called to other capacities, they stayed in touch from time to time. About 15 or so years ago we knew we would be in Salt Lake, and my husband made an appointment to visit Elder Holland. Unfortunately, we were notified that he had an appointment out of the country, and our appointment was canceled. Several weeks later we found ourselves in Utah again. We stopped by the office and asked the secretary if we could see Elder Holland. She was about to protest, but Elder Holland recognized my husband’s voice through the open door. He welcomed us in for a short visit. We discussed family and our church callings. As we were leaving, he shook my husband’s hand, but he embraced me in a big hug. My husband said I floated out of the building. We know that even prophets and apostles are subject to the frailties of life. We will miss Elder Holland, but we are thankful for our Savior Jesus Christ and his eternal purposes for us, especially that families can be together in our Heavenly home.
