Years ago, my wife and I attended a Stake Fireside in Tucson, Arizona, where a visiting authority spoke to this subject in a slightly different way. He said that living by the Spirit sometimes alluded to the promptings of the Holy Ghost and sometimes to the intelligence that fills the universe. At least that is the way I understood him. I pondered on that for several days and came away saying to myself the even God lives by this Spirit. I think we often think of Gospel truths as though they were magic or we commit the ancient, limiting understanding of things by just saying "God did it" and that is the end of the matter. The truth has to be that all things are amenable to logic and founded in some kind of matter, where matter must include energy as Einstein pointed out.

I love this! As a trained musician, I've drawn similar comparisons with sound waves created by singing/instruments, which set up more specific sine waves than speaking alone does. Music literally "resonates" within us in a way words alone don't. It explains the Lord's calling to Emma Smith to collect hymns. And I think it also fits perfectly with the body being filled with light. Thank you for your wonderful insights!

Wow! Thanks Aaron, for this "enlightening" article (pun intended). I'm gonna print this out and stick it on my wall as a constant reminder of how much I need to "sanctify" myself so that my eyes may be opened and my body can be "filled with light". I've often thought about the purpose of light in spiritual matters. I'm reminded that when Moroni left Joseph Smith after conversing in his bedroom, that the light in the room "gathered" around him and opened up a column in which that angelic being ascended into heaven. I definitely need to learn more about that! I began my college education at Georgia Tech, where I gained respect for the "science" of all things. As a life-long fledgling Gospel scholar, I am in awe and gratitude for the "graduate-level Christianity" that I find in the Restored Gospel, as compared with the "kindergarten" level of understanding about spiritual things that I see in other "flavors" of Christianity. Thanks for this essay on the "science" of spirituality.
