“In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days” clearly does not just refer to attempts to poison the wine the Saints would buy for the Sacrament. Our foods today are indeed being “poisoned” with preservatives, high amounts of sugar, and with GMOs. However, regarding depression, there are genetic factors at play as well. I only just recently learned, through a simple blood test, that I have the MTHFR genetic mutation which can result in 30% - 60% less serotonin, dopamine, and norepinepherine produced in my brain than in normal people. So “low mood” for, perhaps, decades is the reality for people with this mutation. We are also less able to methylate B12 or convert it, which requires supplementing with Methyl-B12, Folate and B6. Here is one article explaining some basics: https://www.doctorbecky.net/mthfr.shtml

I'd like to know where the quote from Elder Holland originated. Can anyone help out?

I recall, rolling out a barrel of whole food, home processed MRE's (my Bishop's barrel..that is a barrel of MRE's for anyone in need during disaster time)for a family whose pregnant mother and 2 year old had significant depression and ill health. They lost the depression quickly and then the GI and other symptoms subsided, enough to where, their PCP called me to find out if I put any medication/herbs, etc., in to the food? It followed through testiing, they both had sensitivities to food preservatives, gluten, milk, and others. The first barrel they got was for those who were gluten allergic. The effect was so profound that their doc asked me to give them another month of food, more as a control measure, while he did some investigation through lab tests. Im sure not every situation would create reactions as quickly and strongly as this family exhibited. I think that as I was able to cover a month's rent for them as well, helped to relieve a great deal of stress as well. Stress certainly impacts those who suffer from depression. This family ended up joining the Church because of this. And....if they are reading this on Meridian....I love you and am so proud of you! your friend, Sister O'Meal
