I appreciate this article very much and the comment by K. Chin. This issue of emotional resilience and maturity comes up frequently in the mission health councils where we serve. I was thrilled to hear your YSA sons have completed the inspired Emotional Resilience course prior to serving. This idea was floated as something that might be helpful mission preparation in one meeting recently. <3

Thank you for your article! I am very glad for the new Emotional Resilience course that is now available through the Self-Reliance program. (Talk about an “inspiration” to develop this!) My YSA sons are just finishing their 10-week course in our stake. They have appreciated it, felt it is useful, and have gladly looked forward to their weekly group meetings! It has helped them, each, overcome some emotional hurdles and hesitations to serving missions. (They both received their mission calls last week!) Their group facilitator has been wonderful! I am looking forward to joining a new Emotional Resilience group at our stake’s next Self-Reliance kickoff meeting on March 6th. I’ve often wondered if the scriptural predictions of “…men’s hearts [failing] them…” in the last days is more about various mental and emotional challenges and illness—now facing millions of people on earth—rather than actual heart diseases? (Of course, many skilled and brilliant doctors surgeons, scientists…have made huge strides in the treatment of heart diseases and malfunctions—President Nelson included!) Perhaps, the latter day “failing hearts” are due to the complexities and emotional toll of our modern lives, and Satan’s overwhelming attack on individuals by attacking families? Without an understanding that comes from the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ (and sometimes even with it) our hearts can metaphorically “fail” as things get worse before our Savior Jesus Christ returns to earth. Again, thank you for your very timely article—and especially for the resources and “helps” you include!
