Ken Mazzanti, thank you for your comment! I agree wholeheartedly. I well remember President Ezra Taft Benson in general conference, telling us to "study the Constitution". It was so odd to me at the time...Our ...Watchman on the tower delivered such an amazing message, as he so prophetcally foresaw this day and time!

by migrating out west in 1846/47, the saints essentially removed themselves or got themselves out of the way of the fury which was to soon vex the nation. That fury certainly did vex the nation just over a decade later .

I really appreciate this article. In a lot of ways I feel that our out going President has been treated much the same way as the Prophet Joseph Smith. The forces of evil and deception have been combined to destroy him and the so many good things that have been accomplished and as the young boy Joseph was silenced in the Grove so to has our President been silenced in the media. So many parallels in our society by the government to the Book of Mormon are being played out before our very eyes of power and corruption.

It is evident from the very Declaration of Independence that after seeking a redress of grievances, there comes a time when the yoke of bondage and repression must be thrown off. Our Founding Fathers did not have the benefit of a living prophet to signal when that time might be, but they did have the Light of Christ to guide their conscience and their actions. I have that same light. I have the gift of The Holy Ghost. I will defend my God given liberty against all oppression. I, for one, will not be in bondage to anyone or any government. I will die on my feet before I live on my knees. If you want to be a sheep, that is your privilege, but I am a sheepdog. I will protect and defend the flock.

Thank you for your insights Maurine. I really needed this article to help me with my "going forward attitude".

We might add that God DID punish the nation. Just two decades later, the United States experienced a terrible civil war that affected nearly every family in the country. The battle deaths were on Book of Mormon levels. Abraham Lincoln came to realize that "God wills this contest" and urged the nation to hold days of prayer and repentance. If we look at the civil war in scriptural language, it could look like this: "For behold, they did murder the prophet, they did drive out the righteous from among them, the temple of God they did destroy, and they did grind the faces of the poor (slavery)." When Abraham Lincoln gave his Gettysburg address, he might very well have been concerned that government of the people, by the people, and for the people might very well perish from the earth. Had they not repented, God might very well have swept this nation from the earth as He did the Jaredites and the Nephites.

This critical time in Church History is so relevant to our times right now in the United States. Thank you Maurine for putting in words the thoughts that I have had as I sadly watch anarchy in the streets of Washington. We can all learn from Brother Joseph and how the Lord directed his prophet to respond to the outrageous Extermination Order. What an important time to be studying the Doctrine & Covenants and Church History!
