To brother Forsyth: In 1950, Elder LeGrand Richards wrote the book A Marvelous Work and a Wonder. For many years, it was an important resource for understanding the doctrines of the restoration. The book starts with a story extracted from a pamphlet written by an early apostle, Orson F. Whitney: Many years ago, there came to Salt Lake City a learned doctor of divinity, a member of the Roman Catholic Church…… One day he said to me: “You Mormons are all ignoramuses. You don’t even know the strength of your own position. This was the point being made: if the Catholic Church is true, then the protestant churches are wrong. If the Catholic Church is false, and the protestants who broke off from them are also wrong. Either way, he argued, the protestants don’t have a leg to stand on. So it’s either Catholics or the church of Jesus Christ to let his Saints.
