Last week the discussion was on babbling babies in church. Apparently we didn’t go far enough, because this week’s question is about babbling adults – specifically, babbling women. Here’s what “Frustrated Sister on Vancouver Island” has to say:

The problem if have is sisters who talk either during the hymns in Relief Society (usually the opening) and/or whisper during the lesson. It’s so annoying for those of us who want to hear the talk or feel the Spirit as we sing the hymns.  

I’m sorry to say that sometimes the sisters doing the whispering are teachers themselves. These are lovely, dedicated, amazing women who don’t seem to understand that even though they are being “quiet” they are disturbing others.  

I have no compunction in a secular public setting to turn around and ask people to be quiet, but somehow I feel uncomfortable doing that in Relief Society. Turning around and giving them “the look” doesn’t seem to work.

Thanks for writing, Frustrated. This isn’t as easy a topic as it appears on its face, because it’s hard to know why people are whispering. Is a teacher trying to get someone to participate in her upcoming lesson, or has someone sat next to a person and discerned that she is overwhelmed by life and needs some loving care, or is it just thoughtlessness on the part of the people who are talking? In any case, it’s a distraction, and it has probably frustrated people in wards everywhere.
