When I was a Young Woman mapping out my life and setting goals for my future, I never dreamt of infertility or getting my master’s degree. I truly thought I’d go to college, be married by 21 and have my first baby by 23, a path that is beautiful, but proved to be a life God did not have in mind for me. As I have gone through so many iterations of my plans getting dashed and God’s blueprint unfolding, I’ve realized that even those with lives that seem more “cookie-cutter” or straightforward have had to seek guidance and revelation from God over and over again to find what He wants for their journey.

Those looking in on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and even those within may have an idea of what is and is not acceptable for women to do based on long-held cultural norms and even doctrinal tenets that teach us that being a wife and mother is our highest calling and vital to our eternal progression. I will forever rejoice in those gospel truths and believe wholeheartedly that seeking for those things is the most rewarding and refining part of God’s plan. But growing up with a mother who had 11 children and pursued an important and influential career, my family context, rooted deeply in the gospel of Jesus Christ taught me that focusing on marriage and motherhood does not exempt you from using your gifts and talents to bless people outside of your home, whether in the service of your neighbor or in a career path. In fact, her example to me of using her gifts feels like one of the greatest lessons she could have passed to me in how a disciple lives in action.

Now that I do have that master’s degree and finally do have that sweet baby I prayed for for five years, I find myself at another crossroads and feel this calling to speak to and share how God is leading His covenant daughters down their own unique paths. Thus the beginning of a podcast, Measure of Her Creation, celebrating the revelatory process and divinity of our collective and personal callings as Latter-day Saint women. This podcast will cover the nuances of womanhood, motherhood, education, careers, and how female disciples of Christ are impacting the world as they “hear Him” in every stage.

Michaela Proctor Hutchins, host of the Measure of Her Creation podcast, smiles as she holds her baby and helps her reach for yellow flowers. The image captures the spirit of motherhood, divine purpose, and revelation central to the podcast’s message about how Latter-day Saint women balance faith, family, and calling on the covenant path.

The goal of this podcast is to tell the stories of women who feel guided by the Spirit in their particular spheres and who remain deeply devoted to Jesus Christ and their covenants. This is a space where the God given roles of wife and mother are viewed and presented as the highest and holiest callings, AND where women can share and explore how the Spirit is guiding them to influence their communities and work places.

For women, the navigation between home and outside-of-the-home pursuits often requires constant conversations with God. This may look like discussing how the Spirit has led one woman to homeschool her children and another woman to pursue higher education or run for public office. As female disciples, the covenant path is clear, but how we fulfill the personal measure of our creation and utilize our covenant priesthood power takes persistent seeking and guidance from the Lord. The guidance a mid-single woman receives will look different than a grandmother preparing for her first senior mission. The revelation for an empty nester reinventing her purpose and identity will be different than the mother praying to know if she should have another child.

The hope is that hearing from diverse yet faithful female voices will help others in their own journey to discover what life God has planned for them—cutting comparison and instead marveling at what God can do in each of His daughters’ lives.
