I'm not a fan of doing this, at least not in the last 150 years. The reason is that those cousins are direct ancestors of people who will want to do the work for their kin, who will feel the bonding that Malachi testified of in the process of doing that work for their own kin. It really stinks to be the only member of the church and discover that someone else did the work for your parents grandparents, and great grandparents, all of whom you might have personal memories off, simply because you could.

I just shake my head over helpful articles like this. It's just a continuation of the first Family History class I took almost 40 years ago. It presents how you can capitalize on the work of others but gives no insight on how to find people in the first place. SOMEBODY has to do the primary research. Incidentally, based upon a lot of the information I've seen, even in FamilySearch (perhaps especially in FS), there's a fair chance your relative isn't actually related and, in fact, may not actually exist. For example, my wife's grandfather is not a woman no matter how often FS says he is.
