The author forgot this comparison of both who proposed doing the impossible: TR got the Panama canal built... a herculean feat and much more costly and unrealistic than DT's border wall that some say can't be done.

While I agree that both TR and Trump are/were brash and outspoken, and both from NY, their backgrounds have little else in common. TR's "love" of war was a direct offshoot of his belief that his father's decline was due to the fact that he avoided military service in the Civil War. TR had quite a bit of experience in government long before he became President- City, State and Federal, and he was not elected- he first became president because of McKinley's assassination. He was reelected, but when he ran again later on a third party platform, he was defeated. Even if you like how TR ran the country, it was over 100 ears ago and the world scene is very different today, not to mention the media coverage, social media, and speed with which everything is done in our modern world.

Many of the similarities seemed to be based on opinion. Could the author cite his sources. Point 11 particularly needed a reference. Thanks.

Trump has his faults, as does everyone. We all love the earth, but it has gone too far. People are important too and get badly hurt by the overreach of the EPA and their unvoted on regulations that ruin people's abilities to work and contribute to the economy. People are hurting and l lot of it is from the made up "science" that people are causing global warming. Let's help him suceed so that America's economy will benefit all classes of society, not just the elite.

Now we know everything is o.k., because Teddy and Trumpy are near twins. Let's just eat our milk and cookies cheerfully, while we watch Rome burn and our democracy cease to be.After all Trumpy is just a frisky little fellow who loves us all. Doesn't he? Just ask his playmates, Giuliani and Christie. Oh what fun we have to look forward to, unless we are an "other", which could easily include Mormons, because many of us had the courage to oppose him. Think about it. He does like his revenge doesn't he?Enjoy your cookies.

In comparing to previous presidents, rather than Theodore Roosevelt, I think Trump has more in common with the fictional Lex Luther when he became POTUS in Superman comics: both billionaire businessmen with enormous egos that somehow became unlikely presidents campaigning on the fear felt by the citizens. And both have a huge distrust of aliens.

Gary, if social media had been around in Andrew Jackson's time there would have been live coverage of the Trail of Tears. Perhaps some of the tragedy could have been averted.

Having just recently completed The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, I too was struck several times throughout the campaign of similarities to things said about TR that were being said about Trump. From what I've read, I do believe that Teddy was a deeply moral man and it seems that is not true of Donald. But, I enjoyed your article.

I believed this parallels and told a few people way back during the primaries. Even mentioned it on Mr. Trump's wall on FB. His daughter Ivanka named her son after TR! Great article!

I think it is shameful to compare Trump to one of our greatest presidents. Teddy Roosevelt did not demean women, ridicule people with disabilities, nor was he a racist.
MikeNovember 10, 2016
Great article!

Karen seem to be the only person to read the article. The rest of you are drawing from your own thought on TR and DR with little on no research of either man. Shame upon you.

The objections to Trump from many in and out of the church were not about his brashness or wealth or even his lack of policy. It was his well-documented cruelty, gross immorality, stunning immaturity, habitual fabricating, etc. I don't believe TR exhibited any of these. And he demonstrated true courage, insisting on going to war despite disqualifying health problems. Trump dodged the draft and bragged about it.

Wonder what would have happened in other presidential contests if they had electronic and social capability? I don't think Buchanan, Van Buren, Jackson, and possibly others would ever have been elected.
Peggy SlempNovember 10, 2016
A significant difference is that Teddy cared deeply about the earth and environment, especially for his day. Trump has started off by appointing an anti-environmental person to head the EPA and promises to follow scorched earth policies. Those of us who believe the Lord appointed us to be stewards of His creation are rightfully alarmed.
Shirley GriffinNovember 10, 2016
There are many differences also, mainly having to do with personal integrity and character. Looking at TR's achievements we could then predict a couple of wars (Cuba, Philippines). It's a very different time now, and I would hope as a nation we have learned that newcomers (whether Irish, German, Mexican, or Syrian) enrich our nation.

I must disagree with your statement on McMullin supporters waking up to reality. We knew what the chances were for him to win but chose to follow the council that we choose those who come closest to our value system. I believe that a message, however small it may be, that our system is broken and there are good men and women who come forward to do what they feel can make a difference.

I suppose one could make similar comparisons to any number of presidents such as Jackson, Nixon, etc. It's seems a little early to be making comparisons to a progressive, great president when Trump has not even taken the oath of office yet.
Karen TaylorNovember 10, 2016
Thank you for the comparison. Good article.
