This was very interesting, and I appreciate all the research. As you mention "reflecting on the generations of sacrifice required to engrave the Book of Mormon" -- I've been working for six years now on my own handwritten copy of the Book of Mormon, and one of the many blessings has been a profound appreciation for Nephi, Alma, Mormon and the other recordkeepers. It was so much work!

Thanks for your article about the gold plates. Two things come to my mind. My understanding is that the only writers on the plates from which Joseph translated the record were Mormon and then at the very last, Moroni, neither of whom was an "ancient Near-Eastern scribe. But I don't doubt that they learned their craft from their predecessors and learned to "write small."
