Joseph smith prophecied and knew he would die in Carthage. We do not know that as you say his "efforts to survive" weren't efforts to save the others. His shooting the revolver into the hall may have been to keep the mob from killing others (or even anger over his brothers death) and his fleeing to the window may have been to pull the attention of the mob and to save the lives of the remaining 2 I the room. We have no reason to assume he was fighting for his life at that point.

Another response to Matthew's comment: Doctrine and Covenants 122:9 is where the Lord tells Joseph - while in Liberty Jail - "Thy days are known, and thy years shall not be numbered less; therefore, efear not what man can do, for God shall be with you forever and ever."
It would follow that Joseph was well aware that he would live until it was time for his mortal mission to end and only the Lord knew when his mission was complete...if it hadn't been his time to be martyred, he would have lived longer.

@ Matthew, it appears that you did not read the entire lesson. It is well known that Joseph did not want to die at Carthage, he fought both for himself and for the others being held prisoner to not be killed. The point of the lesson is this "

You are so correct that Joseph was killed because he said he saw God. It is a lie of evil people that say the mob was incensed by the secret polygamy, polyandry, the proposed wife swapping with the Laws and others, the threats and intimidation of anyone who would publish what was going on in Nauvoo. All these lies as well the destruction of the Nauvoo Expositor also had nothing to do with the angry mob. It was because Joseph was just like Jesus and they couldn't stand that.
