Thank you for the encouragement to use my own intelligence in following personal inspiration for what is best for me at 75 and addressing osteopenia for the last five years. Looking forward to future articles.

I am 64 years old, recently had some dental work. The dentist couldn't believe how dense my jaw bone was. What do I do? I strive to follow the word of wisdom, and eat whole grains, dry beans (cooked of course), lentils, lots of veggies, fruits, meat sparingly, and dairy moderately. I have taken coral calcium in capsule form for over 15 years now, and in the last 6-7 years have added magnesium and vitamin D. I don't often drink soda pop, mostly drink water. And my sugar/sweet intake is moderate.

Excellent article. The connection to the Word of Wisdom is that it says to eat meat sparingly - in times of famine . Meat is acidic. So eating a great deal (as most Americans do) creates an acidic environment which breaks down bone to neutralize it. Soda is also acidic and does the same thing. Asians in rural areas (eating not too much meat) have few problems if any with osteoporosis.

Magnisium is also a huge factor en bone strength. You have to have magnisium for the body to use calcium. A major diet problem that weakens the bones is soda because it depletes the body of magnisium, so the calcium can

Donna, I appreiciate your concern, but osteoporosis and the destruction of bone CAN be reversed. Sharon refers to an e-mail program https://save our bones.com by Vivian Goldschmidt. I too follow that, and if you will just take a look at it the information is pretty conclusive. There are always exceptions, and certainly it is advisable to get medical advice - then study it out for yourself and pray (D&C!); experiment with Goldschmidt's advice and then follow up with the doctor to see which way it went. I might add that since much of the calcium in dairy goes to neutralize acid, the amount actually needed in the body if the acid-producing foods were either eliminated or at least greatly reduced, the daily requirement of calcium would also be reduced.

I totally agree with Donna. A good medical doctor should always be consulted for such a debilitating condition. The big problem with these programs is that they most often do not help and people will put off going to a Dr. until it is too late. I do agree that we have to look out for ourselves and research the meds we are given. I too gave up the usual drugs prescribed after reading about their potential side effects. But I keep doing things that I believe strengthen my bones, like exercise and eating a balanced diet (including Lowfat dairy) and at 75 I have few problems. I have seen later stages of oseoporosis and it is not something to treat lightly or irresponsibly. I also am a little disappointed that someone would use the "Word of Wisdom" to promote an article. I really didn't see any connection.

I am afaid of what this artical can do to people who really do need the the medical care for their osteoporosis. There is no question that a healthy diet is a good thing, and to try and prevent as many health problems as possible. But once there is a dignosis of osteoporosis diet alone will not stop or improve the destruction of bone. Working in a facility that researches and care for people with osteoporosis, my concern is that people will not get proper care after reading your article and just try diet alone. There is nothing worse than to watch someone you care about disintegrate as their bones no longer have the strength to hold their ribs off the heart, or break an arm when rolling over while sleeping. Osteoporosis is so much more that a broken ankle or stooped back. Your diet advise might work well for thoes in early years of adulthood, it might help slow down the advancement of osteopina but once menopause occurs and there is a diagnosis of osteoporosis then the person needs to have the care and advise of a good medical doctor to prevent the horrors of bone breakage or the death of a loved one because they are not able to recover from a fractured hip. It is irresponsible to encourage people not to seek qulified medical care but to try alternative care instead.
