Actually, the very first description of the Plan of Salvation was Lehi's and Nephi's vision of the tree of life, which Elder Boyd K. Packer described as "the central message of the Book of Mormon." ("The Things of My Soul," April 1986 general conference.) This underscores the importance of that vision to our understanding of the Atonement of Christ, since it is the dominant doctrinal concept in the first four books of the Book of Mormon, supplemented by such discourses as 2 Nephi chapters 2 and 9.
