As a recovering addict and alcoholic who started with a prescription for Vicodin after a high school football injury; I know how devastating the road of addiction can truly be. I was a straight A student, played many sports; with the option of playing collegiately and I was well liked. The problem was I hated myself and once I started using heavily I hated who I had become. Education is a key tool in treating chemical dependency but most important is to actually treat the underlying cause and condition of the disease. Utah Drug Rehab

Thank you. I read this, made myself FACE a potential problem - and flushed some pain meds a friend gave me for my chronic pain, left over from her surgery. I felt uneasy, but reasoned that since I don't have medical insurance, I have to fudge a little. I know 'flushing' is not ideal, but I felt like Joseph running from Potifar's wife. I had to hurry to save myself. Thank you.

Thank you for helping me understand this. I recently stopped drinking Coke. I used it for " medicine" for years. Last week I was feeling down physically and emotionally and I craved Coke. I knew it would make me feel better. And it would have, so your point that these things do make us feel better rang a bell. Good luck to all.

Thanks for this article! I'd like to add that part of the problem is our societal attitude that everything can be solved by taking a pill. Better to get to know your own body. And try other healing methods, such as Emotional Freedom Technique, Eden Energy Medicine, and of course Dr. Bradley Nelson's Emotion Codes. I have a distrust of counselors and medication, and these methods have helped tremendously with my anxiety issues.
