Some romances are filled with fireworks that light up the sky and others are more of a sparkler that gives off light and warmth, but still leads to something beautiful. For July’s Book Chat with Julie, we have a little of both!

In Sarah Eden’s new book, Fleur de Lis, Henri Fortier has spent thirteen years away from his homeland of France, claiming his friend group—‘The Gents’ as they are affectionately called—as his family in England. But when he is invited to a Gents’ house party and his estranged brother and younger sister are also there, as well as Nicolette, the woman who broke his heart three years ago, he is at a loss as to how to proceed. But as the house party progresses, his traitorous heart begins to fall for the lovely Nicolette again. Nicolette is in the midst of a mission for a secret group in France, however, and a looming scandal regarding a broken engagement. Can these two people find a way to overcome the defenses around their hearts and let love in?

Fleur de Lis is a gentle romance filled with French phrases and mannerisms, coupled with a proper British house party that features a streak of mischievousness. Nicolette and Henri are both complicated characters with the past holding onto their futures as they get reacquainted. The pacing of the book allows the reader to really feel as if they are part of the house party as they get to know the guests and the difficulties facing them as well as their backgrounds. This story truly feels as if it is an ensemble cast where each character contributes to the main romantic leads and adds to the realistic feel to the tale. The Derbyshire setting is beautifully done and easy to imagine with all the attention to detail. The author shines with her talent of depicting complex relationships and the obstacles that face the characters—all while leading to a satisfying and tender ending. There is a small thread of intrigue that readers will definitely hope to see resolved in future books as the Gents series continues. Fleur de Lis is the third book in the Gents series, but this one could be read on its own. A sweet romance that sparkles and warms the reader.

The second book is Betting on the Best Friend’s Brother, a romantic comedy by Melanie Jacobson. Ava is a scientist who is working on finding a genetic screening to help save others from dying of the same condition her father had. Her work in the lab consumes her every waking moment, so her roommate Ruby stages an intervention of sorts with a bet—she will find Ava’s perfect match and in return, she’ll get Ava’s bedroom that has a private bathroom. Ava reluctantly agrees to let Ruby set her up on blind dates, but only because her lab hours were restricted and she’s secretly been in love with Ruby’s brother Joey since she was fourteen years old—and she’s ready to finally be over him. When Joey is called in as the dating coach for Ava, though, everything changes—for both of them. But the path to true love is never easy, especially when you finally see what you never knew you always wanted.

This romance has plenty of fireworks and funny moments. There are quirky neighbors with a parrot who throws insults, lovable roommates who always know what’s best, and a story with enough tension and angst to keep you up past your bedtime. Ava is a relatable heroine who loves science and knowing obscure facts, but also enjoys Netflix and nature walks. She knows herself well and is as intelligent as she is beautiful. Joey is a go-getter in his job, a good older brother, and adorably clueless when it comes to Ava. His job as a marketer fit him perfectly and his inner dialogue when he truly “sees” Ava is swoony and sweet. The secondary cast is memorable in their roles, especially the family scenes and all of their shared history as neighbors. The author has created a wonderful corner of the world that feels real, and there is a lot of potential for future books in this setting. Readers will also enjoy the twist near the end that will leave you with a smile on your face. If you’re looking for a fun summer read, Betting on the Best Friend’s Brother is a good “bet.”
