News reports seem to live off of “gloom and doom” reporting. Yet the Lord speaks otherwise. Ancient prophets looked forward to our day. Why? Time for a little FHE Fun!
Opening Song: #124 Be Still My Soul
Opening Prayer. By invitation.
Time to Celebrate. Not focusing perhaps on Christmas presents received, what other happy moments were there this past week in your loved ones’ lives? Take just a moment to celebrate these successes. This is how your children will notice they do have strength sufficient to serve and to face challenges.
Emergency Prep Minute. Just a little bit of weekly preparation can empower your children as they grow. What emergency tip do you want to share with your family this week? Here’s a quick understanding of how to do “hands-only” CPR. Who knows…you just might save a life!
Favorite Scripture Time. When you let kids and adults share favorite scriptures, you help encourage joy in scripture reading.
Activity. Here is a suggested FHE activity…but do feel free to select what you feel is most suited to your family’s needs this week.
Items Needed:
- Scriptures
- A large paper and pen (or a white board and white board markers)
Have your family open to Doctrine and Covenants 19:37.
Ask the family to raise their hands when they hear the phrase “with a sound of rejoicing,” as a volunteer reads the verse.
Why would the Lord invite us to share the gospel this way? Why would he emphasize “rejoicing”? What reasons do we have to rejoice, living at the beginning of the 21st century? After all, the ancient prophets actually looked forward to our day.
Challenge the family to see if they can come up with 50 reasons to celebrate living now. Invite a volunteer to be the scribe as the family brainstorms.
When finished, ask for a volunteer to “W.I.G. Out.” In other words, to share “W.hat I. G.ot Out of the lesson.” (This is a great idea for summarizing each FHE and to hear inspired words of truth. You’ll be surprised at times of the profound thoughts your children can have as they summarize what the Spirit privately taught them during FHE.)
You may want to close by sharing your thoughts and testimony. After all, while newscasters may choose to focus on “gloom and doom,” the family can choose to celebrate the present time. Because prophecies are unfolding daily and Christ’s coming is approaching. The promises are too many to choose a “gloom and doom” condition!
Closing Song. #310 A Key Was Turned in Latter Days
Closing Prayer. By invitation.
Refreshments. Sharing refreshments together can be a gentle bonding experience as people chat-n-chow. Here is a four-ingredient “Éclair Cake” that is super easy to make and oh-so-tasty.
