KAREN: I have posted an article on coconut oil here: https://discoveringthewordofwisdom.com/meridian/the-coconut-oil-miracle/. DANIEL: Haha! I feel your pain. It looks like the effect of olive oil on blood flow lasts at least three hours. According to one research study, "3-hour declines in flow-mediated vasodilation have been observed with a traditional meal of a hamburger and fries, as well as with cheesecake. Olive oil was also found to have the same impairment to endothelial function as the rest of these high-fat foods." (see: https://nutritionfacts.org/video/olive-oil-and-artery-function/). HAL: Thanks for your comment. Sorry to hear about your friends. There are many very unhealthy vegetarian, vegan, and whole foods diets, but your friends are still statistically uncommon as most studies show vegans are healthier than the average population. Sometimes people switch to a healthier vegetarian, vegan, or whole foods diet when they get sick, trying to help themselves, and that accounts for some correlation (not causation) between eating a healthier diet and dying of disease. I take it you exaggerated when you stated that all of your friends who have tried to be much healthier ended up less healthy. But again, even if you are this unfortunate, you do have my sympathies, but your anecdotal evidence does not tell us anything because we have lots of careful scientific studies that show the benefits of eating an extremely health diet. But I'd recommend rather than going for the latest "study" that tells you something is bad or good for us, that we turn to the Word of Wisdom and check out what the Lord tells us is good or bad for us. He probably knows! And He cares enough to not only tell us but also inspire us with additional wisdom as to how to obey, if we care to have those blessings.

You know, I don't mean to be cynical, but I have four close friends and family members that became avid "healthy eating" advocates (vegetarian, vegan, whole foods, etc.) and every last one of them died of cancer in their early 60's. I have many other friends and family that take physical fitness to the extreme. They all have suffered debilitating injuries or other health issues. I have met so many people who have encouraged me to try their extreme version of the Word of Wisdom - either with diet or exercise - who look like death warmed over. I believe if you keep the basic tenets of the Word of Wisdom and don't do anything stupid, you will live until the Good Lord sees fit to call you home. The people I find to be the healthiest in mind, body, and spirit are those who balance things in their lives and don't go overboard on the latest "study" that tells you something is bad or good for you.

This is so unwelcome, because I really like Smart Balance on toast! Two questions though, with regard to blood flow becoming restricted just after Olive oil consumption: Is the observed effect brief, temporary, or does it become chronic or permanent? And is this effect also seen with other non-hyroginated oils as well? I would like to know this before all happiness in eating is destroyed! lol.

I have also stopped using olive oil, but I do use coconut oil. Coconut oil is healthy and has many nutrients. I have done a great deal of research on coconut oil. I would like to hear your comments regarding coconut oil.
