When my children were young, I was the PTA volunteer for the special school educational and cultural arts assemblies. One of our favorites was a very informative and entertaining group of European medieval peasants who came fully dressed, with songs, musical instruments, stories, occupational tools …. and food!

I was rather shocked to hear them explain that in many respects, the diet of a Medieval peasant was probably much healthier than what we currently have! What ?!? Why?!? Easy! There was NOT a McDonald’s around the corner or other common foods in quantities that define modern life – and sickness. End of subject! French fries and fast food, chips, giant frozen ice cream treats, sodas and diet drinks, mass-processed foods, large-sized portions of meat, snacks, cakes, white/refined breads and sugary baked goods as we know them were simply non-existent. Processing and extensive cooking that depleted nutrients was hundreds of years in the future.

The European medieval diet was largely determined by social class. The majority were peasants, whose daily diet was made up of grains such as wheat, rye, oats or barley (carbohydrates). The grains were boiled whole in a soup or stew, ground into flour and made into bread, or malted and brewed into ale. Estimates from the late Middle Ages indicated that drinking a gallon of ale a day was not unusual, but the actual alcohol content in the drink was very low.

Protein was usually provided by legumes such as beans, peas or lentils, fish where available, or on very rare occasions, meat such as poultry, pork, or beef. Additional nutrients were provided by seasonal fruits when available and vegetables such as onions, leeks, cabbage, garlic, turnips, parsnips, peas and beans.

The peasant’s diet rates high on modern nutrition standards. But seasonal fluctuations in food availability and poor harvests often caused long periods of very poor nutrition.

Child mortality and early death rates were very high, although people who reached adulthood could expect to live to their 50’s and mid-60’s, although this also varied a lot depending on plagues and epidemics. Bad hygiene, uncertain food supply, and almost no or questionable medical care for injuries and illness also took a great toll on human health and mortality.

Fascinating as it all is, would we want to go back for anything other than a Renaissance Fair or cultural excursion? Of course not!

There’s only one trade-off that would be nice to go back to: The environment in general and the food in particular did not have the toxins that each of us are constantly exposed to by simply being alive, i.e., eating, drinking, touching, breathing, in modern-day 2017.

It’s hard to imagine that certain environmental and food quality conditions were BETTER then, but when one learns about modern pesticides and additives and accepted marketing of unhealthy foods and illnesses promoted to increase the profits of pharmaceutical drugs, it’s a fact.

After first learning about how modern day toxins affect every day health (back in 2007 as we first became acquainted with the herbal detox we share here at Meridian and the wonders a clean colon can accomplish), I’ve spent many hours reading up on these toxins. I am, however, not really a scientist or a research specialist. Where was an easy way to understand this important topic without having to have a Masters degree?

After a recent trip to the library, I found a small book that has many of the answers in one place: “Tox-Sick: From Toxic to Not Sick” by the-now-in-her 70’s, TV actress turned health advocate, Suzanne Somers.

The title, of course, is a great “hook” for the book, but it was upon opening the book that I was really hooked with a fascinating and easy-to-read and understand explanation of the toxins that play havoc with our bodies. I ordered my own copy immediately from Amazon to mark up!

She quickly addresses what we all know: Countless people of all ages, with no real reason it seems, just do not feel well. From weight gain, to allergies, to bloating, cramping, skin conditions, etc. these and other troublesome “mystery diseases” are like an invisible enemy that often seem to come from nowhere.   They are baffling to diagnose, treat and live with.

In addition, if you are wondering why there seems to be far more children diagnosed with Autism, ADD and ADHD, her book includes some surprising answers that I have summarized below.

In Tox-Sick, she DEFINES these modern day toxins and where they come from in a very clear and simple way.  She then DOCUMENTS how they affect us and how to compensate for them with fascinating, authoritative interviews from courageous doctors. These doctors with their own specialties that combine their areas of expertise to explain and combat the illnesses and conditions that have caused them have information that is essential for improving many health conditions.

Calling the toxins a “threat you can’t see,” she categorizes them into six groups:

1) Plastics and Other Chemicals
2) The Low-Fat Food Movement and Processed, Sugar-Filled Foods
3) Toxic Mold
4) The Overuse of Medicine
5) GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms)
6) EMFs (Electric and Magnetic Fields and Cell Phones)

These toxins are literally everywhere, from pesticides for growing produce, to additives in cosmetics, to newsprint, to start the list. If we think the FDA has a handle on it all or is truly protecting us, there’s another conversation to be had, as many of these toxins have far-reaching influences that have been dismissed or ignored.

Whew, boy.  How I admire people who have the resources to present this important information in a compelling, understandable way.  For anyone who wants to know WHY we need to get the toxins out, “Tox-Sick” is a must read and she has many ideas for a cleaner, healthier lifestyle and improved health.

For ALL of us who just want to feel better — whether we have time or interest in reading about it or not, we just need to drink the herbal detox and feel a wealth of gratitude for Dr. Miller’s brilliance. It is such a way to easily say goodbye to the toxins that are virtually impossible to avoid.

In the early years of our sharing our herbal detox, a nurse who loved our product shared that she and the doctors with whom she worked had researched why there seemed to be so many more children with autism, ADD and ADHD than a generation ago. She told me they had learned that there was a scientific study to prove that increase was caused by toxins transmitted during the pregnancy from the mother to the fetus through the umbilical cord.

I lost touch with her, and, regrettably that important information. What a delight to find it in this book!!!!

The Harvard School of Public Health initiated the studies in 2006 and then updated in 2014. The purpose was to document that the increasing toxins in our world do indeed have a correlation to both a child’s behavior and performance in school.  (The link to the entire article is at the bottom.)  Funding for this study by the Harvard School of Public Health was provided by the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences.

In 2006, scientists from the Harvard School of Public Health and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai identified five industrial chemicals responsible for causing harm to the brain — lead, methylmercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (found in electric transformers, motors and capacitors), arsenic (found in soil and water as well as in wood preservatives and pesticides) and toluene (used in processing gasoline as well as used in paint thinner, fingernail polish and leather tanning).

Exposure to these neurotoxins was associated showed changes in neuron development in the fetus as well as among infants. They also showed lower school performance, delinquent behavior, neurological abnormalities and reduced IQ in school-age children.

Now the same researchers have reviewed the literature and found six additional industrial chemicals that can hamper normal brain development. These are manganese, fluoride, chlorpyrifos, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, tetrachloroethylene and polybrominated diphenyl ethers.

Manganese, they say, is found in drinking water and can contribute to lower math scores and heightened hyperactivity. Exposure to high levels of fluoride from drinking water can contribute to a seven-point drop in IQ on average. The remaining chemicals, which are found in solvents and pesticides, have been linked to deficits in social development and increased aggressive behaviors.

The research team acknowledged that there isn’t a causal connection between exposure to any single chemical and behavioral or neurological problems — it’s too challenging to isolate the effects of each chemical to come to such conclusions.

But they say the growing body of research that is finding links between higher levels of these chemicals in expectant mothers’ blood and urine and the brain disorders in their children should sound alarms about how damaging these chemicals can be.

The developing brain in particular, they say, is vulnerable to the effects of these chemicals, and in many cases, the changes they trigger are permanent. Wow!

“The consequence of such brain damage is impaired [central nervous system] function that lasts a lifetime and might result in reduced intelligence, as expressed in terms of lost IQ points, or disruption in behavior,” they write in their report, which was published in the journal Lancet Neurology.”

Our BEST HEALTH comes from focusing on HEALTH (not sickness) and all the good and easy things there are to do to create it!  Eating a healthy diet (thank you, Jane Birch and Discovering The Word of Wisdom!) washing our hands – and our fruits and veggies, laughing with dear ones,  appreciating and expressing gratitude for things that tickle us, and enjoying some exercise in the sunshine are of inestimable value!
