Podcast: The “Doing It All” Myth – and Doing It All with God

Mother juggling work and children while learning that Doing it All with faith means relying on God, personal revelation, and following Jesus Christ
Share

A winter-themed Meridian Magazine subscription banner featuring a red cardinal in snowy branches, inviting readers to support faith-centered content that helps women navigate motherhood, faith, and trusting God’s guidance in every season.

In this episode, I sit down with Katelyn Fagan, a mother of eight (including two sets of twins!) and an MBA graduate, to talk about what it really means to “do it all” as women striving to follow Jesus Christ. We share personal experiences with motherhood, education, work, and revelation, and how seeking God’s guidance helps us move forward with confidence and peace. This conversation is about trusting personal revelation and learning to partner with God as He leads us in different seasons of life — one faithful step at a time.

An upward view of a tall tree in the Sacred Grove surrounded by lush green leaves, symbolizing revelation and divine guidance. A quote from Elder David A. Bednar overlays the image, referencing Joseph Smith’s heartfelt prayer and intent to act upon revealed truth. This image was featured in Meridian Magazine’s Sunday General Conference memes to highlight eternal truths and inspiration from the April 2025 Latter-day Saint General Conference. The quote says: "Joseph did not pray merely to know what was right. Rather, he prayed to know what was right so that he could do what was right."

A portrait of Jesus Christ paired with a quote from Elder Steven D. Shumway shared during the Sunday session of General Conference. The quote reads, “When we say yes to serving, we are saying yes to Jesus Christ. And when we say yes to Christ, we are saying yes to the most abundant life possible.” This powerful meme encourages discipleship and abundant living through faithful service.

Sister Tamara W. Runia speaks at the pulpit during General Conference, accompanied by her quote: “The commandments are the path away from pain.” This message from the Sunday session highlights how divine guidance leads to healing and peace.

A peaceful path winds through a sunlit forest, overlaid with the quote from Sister Tamara W. Runia: “We don’t stay on the covenant path by never making a mistake. We stay on the path by repenting every day.” This inspirational meme reminds viewers that daily repentance keeps us aligned with God.

A young girl climbs a steep cliff, symbolizing spiritual effort and determination. Quote: “What matters to the Lord is not merely whether we are able, but whether we are willing to do all we can to follow Him as our Savior.” —Bishop Gérald Caussé. This image was shared as part of Meridian Magazine’s General Conference quote series, offering visual inspiration tied to faith, effort, and discipleship.

Depiction of Jesus Christ speaking tenderly with an elderly man, symbolizing compassion and understanding. Quote: “Jesus Christ answers the longings of our hearts and the questions of our souls. A joyful couple running outdoors, paired with a quote from President Dallin H. Oaks: “Just as our physical muscles cannot be developed or maintained without straining against the law of gravity, so mortal growth requires man to strain against Satan’s temptations and other mortal opposition.” Featured as part of Meridian Magazine’s General Conference quotes.

Oaks’ quote: “Commandments define the path our Heavenly Father has marked out for us to progress toward eternal life.” This image illustrates spiritual guidance and is featured in Meridian Magazine’s General Conference collection.

Sunday Afternoon, April 6, 2025 Session

Elder Ulisses Soares speaks at the pulpit during General Conference, delivering a message on reverence as a core spiritual principle. Quote: “Reverence is not just an aspect of spirituality; it is the essence of it.” – Elder Ulisses Soares

A person stands on a mountain peak at sunrise, symbolizing awe and reverence. Quote: “I witness that as we embrace this gift of reverence for sacred things—whether in the mountain of the Lord’s House, in a meetinghouse, or in our own home—we will be filled with astounding amazement and awe.” – Elder Ulisses Soares

Jesus Christ walks with His disciples through a field, carrying baskets of bread. Quote: “Disciples are ‘apprentices’ who devote their lives to becoming like their teacher.” – Elder Michael B. Strong

Elder Patrick Kearon delivers a powerful General Conference message about God’s love and recognizing His hand in our lives. Quote: “You truly are God’s beloved child. When you welcome this majestic reality into your very soul…you can feel His love, hear His voice, and recognise His hand no matter what is happening, or not happening, in your life.”

A woman stands in the sunlight, arms lifted in peace, echoing Elder Patrick Kearon’s words from General Conference: “You can feel His love, hear His voice, and recognise His hand… life takes on new brilliance, beauty, and hope.”

A gift wrapped in red ribbon being given, representing Elder Patrick Kearon’s insight: “Receiving a gift is not passive, but an intentional and meaningful process… that strengthens the bonds between giver and receiver.”

President Russell M. Nelson encourages active faith and obedience in General Conference with the reminder: “When I speak of having confidence before God, I am referring to having confidence in approaching God right now!”

We will continue to create memes and reels in the days and weeks to follow. We are so grateful we live at a time when there are prophets and leaders among us who give us “the will of the Lord…the mind of the Lord…the word of the Lord…the voice of the Lord, and the power of God unto salvation.” (See Doctrine and Covenants 68:4)

At the end of counseling sessions, the therapist records notes of the session including the content of what was discussed and how the process went. One important observation includes ‘insight.” How well or how much is the client able to see an issue from a different perspective? How well are they able to apply that insight to manage the emotional impact of whatever is going on? How does that impact their lives? Therapists often invite their clients to complete an evaluation of the appointment to receive feedback to be more effective as a counselor. It gives them both an opportunity to see things differently. How often do we invite feedback? How would others evaluate our “insight” and how we apply what we learn? Or alternatively, how often is something said that we might think: “Who?” “Me?”

In April 2023 in his wonderful General Conference talk “Peacemakers Needed,” our dear prophet Russell M. Nelson told the story of a surgeon flinging a scalpel that stuck in President Nelson’s arm. President went on to discuss how peacemakers are needed in our society today. You may remember some of the key points of his talk:

  • Civility and decency seem to have disappeared during this era of polarization and passionate disagreements.
  • Vulgarity, faultfinding, and evil speaking of others are all too common.
  • I am greatly concerned that so many people seem to believe that it is completely acceptable to condemn, malign, and vilify anyone who does not agree with them.
  • Anger never persuades. Hostility builds no one. Contention never leads to inspired solutions.
  • In situations that are highly charged and filled with contention, I invite you to remember Jesus Christ. Pray to have the courage and wisdom to say or do what He would. As we follow the Prince of Peace, we will become His peacemakers.

President Nelson continued with many salient points, encouragement, and invitations. Then he kindly brought us back from asking “Who? Me?” to asking “Lord, is it I?” He said “At this point you may be thinking that this message would really help someone you know. Perhaps you are hoping that it will help him or her to be nicer to you. I hope it will! But I also hope that you will look deeply into your heart to see if there are shards of pride or jealousy that prevent you from becoming a peacemaker.”

Now we approach another General Conference. What a blessing to receive guidance, instruction, invitations, and promised blessings from living prophets and apostles! May the Lord bless us to have the insight to do better and be better as His disciples as we strive to gather Israel on both sides of the veil.
