Sure to be a new favorite for Sunday afternoons, gospel study, or any other time you need a lift, Paul Cardall’s new album 40 Hymns for Forty Days debuted recently at #1 on the Billboard charts for its genre. Currently the 3rd best-selling item at Deseret Book, the album provides beautiful arrangements of holy songs on piano, with orchestral accompaniment.
Cardall, a widely-celebrated composer and musician with fans of many faiths all over the world, is also a savvy collaborator. “I have always believed that if you want something great, you have to surround yourself with the very best talent,” he explains, and he means it. On this album he brings aboard musicians from the Utah Symphony Orchestra, accompanists from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and Marshall McDonald (who worked with Cardall on the Ephraim’s Rescue score and orchestrates music for David Archuleta, The Piano Guys, and others).
The album, which you can download digitally or purchase as a two-disc set, includes such favorites as Jesus the Very Thought of Thee, How Firm a Foundation, Sweet Hour of Prayer, and We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet. There’s a nice balance between hymns of the Restoration, more broadly Christian hymns that Latter-day Saints share with other faiths, and lesser-known songs that nonetheless stir the soul. The arrangements are gentle and warm. We played it in our house all day last Sunday, and it brought a spirit of peace to the home. If you enjoy spiritual music, I highly recommend this for your collection.
