According to the Word of Wisdom (D&C 89:14,16) all grain is the "staff of life" and should be the foundation of our diet. Along with this we are told to eat wholesome vegetables (herbs) (v. 10) and fruits that are in season (v. 16.) Animal products are to be used sparingly, if at all (v. 12-13.) Thank you for highlighting the changes to the food pyramid! I am glad they finally are beginning to match scientific studies as well as revelation in the Word of Wisdom. The Word of Wisdom is so much more than the don’ts! It’s interesting to note how the prophets love the Word of Wisdom. Brigham Young had a lot to say about the Word of Wisdom. …”I tell them to do so, but give me a piece of Johnny-cake [cornbread]; I would rather have it than their pies and tarts and sweet meats. Let me have something that will sustain nature and leave my stomach and whole system clear to receive the Spirit of the Lord and be free from headache and pains of every kind (DBY, 189) - from Teachings of the Presidents: Brigham Young Chapter 29. And President Nelson had many anecdotes about good eating, exercise, and moderation. There’s a really interesting book that dives into the Word of Wisdom called “The Word of Wisdom: Health, Healing, and the Destroying Angel” by a Jordan and Cassidy Gunderson. This book totally changed the way I looked at that D&C 89.
