I have appreciated your thoughts and particularly the Patton and Hinkley/Jones quotes. I do not find the name of the author of the whole article other than comments directed to -Maurine. Please comment and let me know her name. Thanks.

Tonight I was telling two non members about "most puts don't drop" quotes and would love to send it to them in his wonderful voice. My searching led to this beautiful talk and your comments, which my struggling soul so needed right now! It is as manna from heaven. Thank you! Bless us all in our trials. I, an older lady, who feels so that I tried to do all the right things, yet have had so many disappointments that I can hardly "get up" again, will reread and cherish these words.

It's been a few years, but this article is still impacting people-- or at least me, I love this! I've felt so disappointed and tired of everything for a while now, but this article gave me hope that there's really a plan! I thought my plan to go on a mission and go to college was good enough, but I'll trust in His plan. I hope He's almost done with His plan. But even if He's not, I'll keep pushing. I'll push until I'm exhausted, and then push a little more. Again, this article is so beautifully written, and helped me to see the bigger picture!

My favorite quote from The Princess Bride is: "Get used to disappointment." I used to tell this to my kids when things didn't go their way. As one who had a very clear picture of life as it "should" have been, I know how disappointment can lead to bitterness. I turned away from God because of the first big disappointment of my young life. My temple marriage to my returned missionary, eagle scout husband ended in divorce while I was pregnant with our first child; not my decision. I prayed for a miracle. Ten years later I found myself married to the man of my dreams, though he is not an eagle scout, he is a man of amazing integrity and honor and has been a scout master three times! I have learned to trust more and complain less, though I'm still working on it.

Thank you for wording this so beautifully. I was just diagnosed with an illness that has required me to withdraw from college, quit my job, and move back in with my family. I've never felt more confused, alone, and scared of the future as I have the past few months, but this was exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you.

Here is the original speech where Gordon B. Hinckley quoted Jenkin Lloyd Jones: https://speeches.byu.edu/?act=viewitem&id=1018

Powerful! Thank you for reminding us to relax and believe and then to do what God has asked us to do!

You touched my heart and spirit again with your beautiful, inspired article. The eternal perspective this article illustrates so perfectly, is somehow soothing and strengthening to the soul. Your closeness to the spirit and your ability to share this with others in words is such a blessing. Thank you for this wonderful gift.

Thank you for quoting President Hinckley in paragraph 6.I would love to read the full address. I remember when he gave that talk! But I can't remember the year! Please publish the reference so that we can look it up. Thank you!

JessJanuary 22, 2015

I've this quote attributed to President Hinckley many times but President Hinckley was quoting Jenkin Lloyd Jones in this "most putts don't drop" message.

I did a quick Google search and could not find the source of the Patton story. I would like to use the story in my teaching but I always like to give the original source. Do you mind sharing it?

Original Pres. Hinckley quote of 2 lines, was from a longer quote by Jenkin Lloyd Jones, a Welsh immigrant and Unitarian Minister in Wisconsin. Great article, Maureen.

All quotes were given a reference except Pres. Hinckley's partial quote. Original author: Jenkin Lloyd Jones, a Welsh immigrant who became a Unitarian minister in Wisconsin. The whole quote is as interesting as the 2 lines in this article. Very good article, Maureen - well written.

I woke up this morning with a very melancholy spirit as my mind returned to decisions made in my past that brought much sorrow into my life and the lives of my family. I spent too much time thinking about how I would make better choices if I were given the opportunity to return to my past and live those circumstances again. Thank you for this article it was exactly what I needed to read this morning.

Maurine, Thank you, once again, for deeply penetrating prose!! How grateful I am for your message. I've been through the pattern you've outlined, frustrated, heartbroken and bewildered - even wondering if God knew I was going through a trial. Occasionally, it's taken a few years for my vision to get clear and see his mighty hand involved in the tender mercy. How grateful I am "for unanswered prayers". I will keep your article for future reference and to share with clients. Beautiful!

The wonderful articles by so many authors and the are so interesting and testimony building. I love the photo essays from the temple dedications. Thank you so much.
