The Guide to Safe Scouting now specifically prohibits riding in the back of a pickup truck (even within a Scout reservation).

In at least two states riding in the back of a pickup is illeagle. My brother was a nurse on an indian reservation. Although the state law required seats and seat belts in the case of passengers in the bed of a pickup, the indian reservation exempted themselves. He had to treat a 3 year old who had bounced out of the back of a pickup when it hit a bump at 30 MPH. What Daris did taught a timely lesson. But what if he was T boned at an intersection?

Reminds me of riding in the back of my own scoutmaster's truck as a young man. Doing that today would be grounds for child endangerment charges but back in the day it was just a part of farm life. Great story about hosing down your scouts. Thanks for sharing it!
