Many years ago when our oldest daughter was very small, my husband and I decided there wasn't anything redeeming enough about Halloween to celebrate it. Too much candy (diabetes runs in my family), and it's not really celebrating anything positive in a religious or patriotic way. So we started a tradition on Halloween of seeing two movies at a dollar theater and going out to dinner in between. Our kids have complained a little over the years about not getting to go trick-or-treating, but they've also learned to love our movie tradition!
