Where else can you go and spend so little? $500 per month is a bargain, especially when you factor in other expenses besides housing. Back before there was a standard monthly cost and allocation of funds, missionaries managed their finances themselves. Initially my mission cost was $120 per month, but due to inflation I could easily get by for half that for a good part of my mission. Friends supplemented what I did not have, and after I got home I was able to return excess funds in my account to help other missionaries.

Two thoughts. One is that having access to a car at home is a privilege. Senior missionaries pay extra, too. Maybe paying extra would help missionaries not have the sense of entitlement. The other thought is that if the person is willing, the Lord will provide, I know he will. Start that mission with an act of faith, find a job, work hard, and pray. The Lord will provide!

Well worth the money. Changes so many lives including the missionary and his or her family!!!!!

Before the Church "standardized" the monthly cost for missionaries our serving the Lord we had a young man leave from our ward to serve in Japan. The family's monthly contribution was well in excess of $1,000/ month. This monthly increase is really quite reasonable.
