If someone's taking years to repent that's because they're not making progress. Don't just blame bishops. They have plenty to deal with and get all the anechdotal blame.

it so sad that this article could not be sent to every Bishop in the church. I have been a member for over 40 yrs and have seen friends suffer endless years before being back into fellowship , We wait so long that these people leave the church and find other faiths that will work with them and really show the hand of fellowship. We are told "do NOT talk about this to ANYONE, somtimes not ever the spouse if you have one" shush...

Lots of great ideas in here, Andy, thanks. Just one came out of left field: "Love yourself first." That's pop psychology, and for some reason people to think it's the gospel. I've heard people say that's the message of "Love they neighbor as thyself' -- to love yourself first. If so, it's odd that the story the Savior users to illustrate that commandment, the good Samaritan, never once thinks about himself. Not once. Once we grasp how much the Lord loves us, there's no need for such a focus on ourselves first.

I really appreciate this article! I realize that I have experienced these same misguided ideas about repentance that you have mentioned. Thanks for the reminders and clarification of what repentance is not.

One of the best articles on repentance I have ever read. I wish EVERYONE could read this! It reminds us that repentance includes LIGHT and JOY!

An additional thing that repentance does NOT mean: it does not require us to personally repent (or personally accept some kind of inherited guilt) because of Adam's transgression in the Garden of Eden. (2nd Article of Faith.)
