Always Before Our Eyes

The McDonald’s closest to our home now sports a set of eight beautiful flags extending from the rooftop with the words “Now Open 24 Hours!” printed on each. No doubt about it, they’re all about improving their circumstances – but so are we.

Although they’ve surely increased their healthy options and no longer offer to super-size fries and drinks, I still laugh when I remember the joke one of my friends shared one day while eating at McDonald’s with her 12-year-old son. “Mom,” he said with a smile. “When you super-size your fries, you super-size your buns!”

I was chuckling out loud about that while stopped at a red light in front of our McDonald’s with my own son, when a middle-aged woman jogged by. She looked just beautiful – not in baggy sweats, but in fitted leggings and a matching t-shirt. A curly pony tail bounced from underneath a cute baseball cap with each stride. Though definitely not a young woman and clearly working up a sweat, she looked terrific.

“Wow! I wish I looked like that!” I said.

Cooper, a true gentleman replied, “Mom, I like the way YOU look!” It gave me an opportunity to share some of my experiences with others and my own struggles. Out of the mouths of babes he calmly said, “Well, that’s their decision to be that way.”

Decision? Ouch! (And if health conditions prevent you from losing weight, I encourage you to please go back and read my article “But If Not” instead of reading the rest of this one!)

You might be saying, “Don’t tell me that! Why would anyone decide to be overweight?” Oh, the painful honesty required to answer that one, to not only lose (which implies something to be found), but to truly discard the pounds. Yes, we all know: too much food, too often, for too many wrong reasons.

It’s easy to be motivated with articles, printed success stories, or seeing someone who has discarded the weight permanently. However, like a potato chip or candy that quickly dissolves – swallowed – and gone, the motivation to make personal healthy choices often disappears for many of us in a matter of moments, minutes or at best, a few short days or weeks.

What can we do so that the resolve sticks? King Benjamin is my prophet of the week! While reading in Mosiah, I reflected on how he memorialized Lehi to his sons, telling them in Mosiah 1;3-5, how important the plates were:

“My sons” he said, “were it not for these plates which contain these records and these commandments, we must have suffered in ignorance … were it not for these things which have been kept and preserved by the hand of God, that we might read and understand of these mysteries, and have his commandments always before our eyes, even our fathers would have dwindled in unbelief …oh, my sons, I would that ye should remember that these sayings are true, and we can know of their surety because we have them before our eyes .”

Always before our eyes! The phrase rang a beautiful bell within me …. Always before our eyes. How can we do that with our great need to stay centered, optimistic and capable of healthy living choices?

Bob and I are currently reading some very interesting books by Joe Vitale. The Attractor Factor and The Key have been especially helpful. Though not to be compared with the beauties of the gospel, the scriptures or the Atonement, his books contain some valuable exercises to clear pathways for achieving goals. Here is one that we have recently used that has been especially exciting because, as you will see, the end result is that it creates a way to have the goal “always before our eyes.”

Take two sheets of paper. On the first sheet of paper describe the negative condition you are in. Describe the picture of the situation as it is now, and really feel the emotions associated with it. This probably won’t feel great. But you want to get into that feeling, because the more you feel it, the more you will release it

In other words, whatever emotion you suppress will sooner or later need to be expressed. While it’s suppressed, it’s clogging up your inner self. Release it, and you free your energy to go out and attract what you want. Let your feelings come to the surface as you describe this situation or condition that you don’t want.

Now put that first sheet aside.

Take the second sheet, and begin to write out how you want the situation or condition to be. Get into the joyful feeling associated with having or doing or being the thing you desire. Really immerse yourself in this good energy. Describe the situation you want to be, and paint this wonderful picture so completely that you can feel it as you write it.

Just as you wanted to experience the negative emotion so that you could release it, you now want to experience the positive emotion so you can create a new picture to anchor in your subconscious. The more you can fall in love with this new image and these new feelings, the faster you will manifest them.

Now, take the first sheet, look it over, and burn it.

Take the second sheet, fold it up, and carry it with you.

There! You have it, always before your eyes.

The beauties of nature that are always before our eyes are proof of Heavenly Father’s love for us. By taking the steps necessary to make health choices that strengthen our bodies and spirits we can express gratitude for our lives and prove our love for Him.

Instead of a recipe, here is a list of 20 quickie snacks for you to print out and keep “always before your eyes” on the refrigerator!


  1. 100 tiny fat-free pretzel sticks
  2. 25 fresh or frozen grapes
  3. 10 animal crackers
  4. 8 baked tortilla chips with 1/4 cup salsa
  5. 3 cups fat-free microwave popcorn with 1 Tbsp. grated Parmesan Cheese
  6. Three 2 1/2 inch graham cracker squares
  7. 3 whole medium carrots
  8. 3 small plums
  9. 2 cups raw broccoli or cauliflower
  10. 2 medium tangerines or clementines
  11. 1 mini bagel with 1 Tbs. reduced fat cream cheese
  12. 1 frozen low-fat fudge bar
  13. 1 100% frozen fruit juice bar
  14. 1 medium banana
  15. 1 cup sugar-free hot cocoa with 2 marshmallows
  16. 1 oz.

    raisins or dried berries
  17. 1/2 cup nonfat yogurt with 2 Tbsp. fruit
  18. 3 small hard chocolate candies (like Tastetations)
  19. 1/2 cup fat free pudding with 1 Tbsp. Cool Whip
  20. 1/4 cup cantaloupe topped with 1/2 cup yogurt
