Special Note From Carolyn:  My husband and I are thrilled to be part of the Meridian Kyani Team!  If you or a loved one suffer from chronic pain, diabetes, arthritis, problems with memory functions, insomnia or migraines, then you need to know about this marvelous product and its LDS roots.  We will be having a special live meeting in the Washington DC area the end of September. I am in the process of building my own website and will keep you posted on details in my upcoming articles and with Meridian ads.  In the meantime, to learn more, go to www.Kyanitestimonial.blogspot.com and www.Kyani.net/245692.  And if you’re in the Washington, D.C. area, please send me an e-mail! [email protected] or give me a call:  571/643-9295.)

Hooray September!  The fresh beginning of the new month, season and “back to school” spirit is even more motivational than January 1 in my books!  September and cooler weather have a way of revealing that our loose, light summer clothing has been hiding extra pounds from vacations, erratic schedules and too much ice cream.  But, no matter!  It’s September!  Our Heavenly Father grants us U-turns in every area and at every time in our lives and our bodies are ever-forgiving as well.  If you’ve tucked aside Dr. Gardner’s and Dian Thomas’s great articles over the past several weeks waiting for September – well, the day of reckoning has arrived!

In the U.S., this first Monday of September is also Labor Day, a holiday dedicated to American workers. It’s time to embrace my favorite quote from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow:

“Let us, then, be up and doing, with a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing, learn to labor and to wait!

Wait for what?  The healthier bodies, increased energy and self-confidence that always — and quickly — come when we “labor while it is called today.” (D&C 64:25)

Here are three ways to get ourselves back into our skinny jeans and onto better health in no time.

1  Get The Picture

One of the great delights of my summer was an e-mail from a friend with a series of incredible photos showing the 21 day cycle of two baby hummingbird From the tiny tic-tac size eggs in the nest, to the day they both flew off on their own – only 21 days! For sheer joy and a sense of wonder for our Heavenly Father’s mighty powers, CLICK HERE

Now, if he will create something so incredible for birds of the air in a mere 21 days, then what strength and power can he endow to us, his very off-spring, as we strive to master our bodies?

The Savior’s kind and encouraging words in Matthew 10:31 (“ … not even one sparrow shall fall on the ground without your Father …Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows”) are solace to our souls for knowing that with a prayer and vision of his love for us, we can do what is required on a daily/hourly/minute-by-minute basis to say YES to healthy things and healthy amounts, and NO to the things that betray our bodies.

While we may not progress as quickly as the hummingbird cycle, what can we do in 21 days or three weeks?  A lot!  We can change our mental focus and lose a pound or two or three by starting with the basics:

a)  Clear out the cupboards and freezer of over-processed, over-refined foods and snacks we don’t need (YAY Dr. Gardner and Kathy Kidd for your inspiration and example!)

b)  Start using and enjoying our favorite healthy recipes and snacks
c) Get to the library for some new cookbooks and exercise books

d)  Get active!  Decide on an enjoyable exercise, establish a time for it and, as President Kimball instructed “Just Do It!”  Add a friend or upbeat music to boost the “fun” element.

e)  Make a trip to a restaurant supply store for the food portioning scoops as recommended by Dian Thomas. Get at least one each of scoops in the  _ cup, _ cup and 1 cup sizes.   They can’t be beat for a quick, easy way to establish portion control.

f) A mental picture: Imagine three or four months down the road when it’s the first of December and the first of January. How do you want to feel?  What do you want to have established and achieved? It’s amazing how you can change your health, weight and shape in 90 to 120 days.

I highly recommend Dr. Joyce Vedral’s workout books available at the library. She has them for men, women and teens. They all include a timeline and before-and-after photos of what to expect week by week in this 3-4 month timeframe.  She is in her 60’s now, but didn’t start her work as a fitness professional until well into her 40’s! She’s wonderful proof of how our bodies can renew themselves.

2. Brush and Flush

One of our favorite elementary school teachers included a toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste in a zip-lock bag on her back-to-school supply list.  Each day after lunch, her students stopped at the restroom to “brush and flush.”

How easy it is to say “No” to second helpings, a tempting goody or mindless eating after brushing our teeth.  We need to be brushing our teeth after every meal or snack, or when we feel inclined to nibble.  We need a toothbrush and toothpaste in the bathroom closest to the kitchen and in our desk drawers at work!

We need to be drinking enough water to be visiting the bathroom often. Lots of water, at least 6-8 glasses per day, cleanses and refreshes in the best way possible.  You may be interested in the herbal de-tox tonic I offer at www.MyMiracleTea.com  It’s great for removing undigested gunk from your system (and flattens tummies in the process) and is just very nice  for an over-all fresh start.

As a quick substitute for a toothbrush, a very strong breath mint will do.

3)  Go Back to School Healthy ABCs.

It’s been a couple of years since I shared these and they are always fun.  CLICK HERE  and print out several mini-posters to post on your refrigerator, bathroom mirror, desk bulletin board, etc.
