An impressive number and wide range of artistic events are scheduled for Temple Square in June, nine in the Assembly Hall, one in the Tabernacle, and eight at Brigham Young Historic Park.
Following concert protocol, Assembly Hall and Tabernacle events are for persons eight and older. Concerts in the Assembly Hall and Tabernacle begin at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday June 5—Mountain West Chorale, under the direction of Richard Pearce, will sing in the Assembly Hall a varied program of inspiration, patriotic, and choral standards. Soloists for the evening will be Cheryl Buhler, Laron Lemon, and Kathy Baker.
Saturday June 12—Thomas Hecht, Bachauer International Piano Jurist, will play in the Assembly Hall, Copland’s Piano Sonata (1939-41); Beethoven’s Six Bagatelles, Op. 126; and Liszt’s Tarantella from Venezia e Napoli. Hecht, head of piano studies at Singapore’s new Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music is an internationally acclaimed concert artist and regarded as one of the leading piano teachers of this generation.
Tuesday June 15—Logan Skelton, Bachauer International Piano Jurist, will play in the Assembly Hall, selections from Bartók, Mompou, Prokofiev, and Bolcom, as well as the world premiere of Henry Martin’s At Midnight’s Hour. Skelton has been featured on many public radio and television programs, and is a member of the artist piano faculty at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Wednesday June 16—Douglas Humpherys, Bachauer International Piano Jurist, will play in the Assembly Hall, Haydn’s Fantasy in C Major, Hob. XVII/4; Mozart’s Adagio in B Minor, K.540; Brahms’ Capriccio in F Sharp Minor, Op. 76 #1 and Intermezzo in E Flat Minor, Op. 118 #6; and Ravel’s Sonatine in F Sharp Minor. Humphreys is co-chair of Eastman School of Music’s piano department and continues to concertize widely throughout the world.
Thursday June 17—Massimiliano Frani, Bachauer International Piano Jurist from Italy, will play in the Assembly Hall, Schubert’s Drei Klavierstucke D. 946; Beethoven’s Sonata in D Minor, Op. 31, No. 2; and Chopin’s Polonaise—Fantasie in A Flat Major, Op. 61. Frani has performed in North America, Europe, and Asia and serves as artistic director of Veni ce’s Armoniae—International Center for Music and Culture.
Friday June 18—Gennady Dzubenko, Bachauer International Piano Jurist from Russia, will play in the Assembly Hall, Liszt’s Ballada #2 h-moll, Funerailles, and Hungarian Rhapsody #12; Tchaikovsky’s Dumka; Rachmaninov’s Preludes cis-moll Op. 3 #2 and c-moll Op. 23 #7; and Prokofiev’s 10 Fleeting Visions, Op. 22, and Etude d-moll, Op. 2 #1. Dzubenko heads the piano department at Moscow State Music Institute.
Saturday June 19—Soprano Laurel James and mezzo-soprano Connie Nokes-Roberts will sing in the Assembly Hall a program divided into a French set, Spanish songs, works in English, and pieces by Schumann and Rossini. James has carried leading roles with the Utah Opera production as well as other opera companies, and Nokes-Roberts has sung throughout the U.S. in a many diverse settings.
Tuesday-Friday June 22-25—Bachauer Junior Piano Competition, in the Assembly Hall from 10:00 a.m. until 9 p.m., with a mid-afternoon break (2:00-5:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday; 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday). Thirty-seven children, ages 11-13 from 13 countries compete in two rounds throughout the week.
Friday June 25—Summer on the Square Gala Concert, featuring Michael Ballam and the Utah Festival Opera Orchestra & Singers, will be performing in the Tabernacle. Tickets are required and can be ordered by calling 801-240-0080 or online at www.lds.org. Selections from Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Verdi’s Rigoletto; Lerner and Loewe’s Brigadoon; and Norman and Simon’s The Secret Garden will be performed by the orchestra and singers. Michael Ballam, who is the general director of Logan’s Utah Festival Opera, will conclude the evening with several favorite selections.
Saturday June 26—Bachauer Junior Piano Competition Finals, in the Assembly Hall from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Six finalists perform concerto movements.
“Concerts in the Park”
Brigham Young Historic Park
Temple Square Performances presents the popular “Concerts in the Park” on Tuesdays and Fridays evenings throughout the summer in the Brigham Young Historic Park, located on the southeast corner of State Street and Second Avenue. Tuesday concerts are family-oriented and Friday concerts are more youth-oriented, however all ages are welcome.
The June park concerts begin at 8:00 p.m. Free parking is available at 59 E. North Temple. Seating is limited, however attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. In the event of rain, call 801-240-0213 for venue changes; changes will also be posted at the park.
