2002 PEARL Award Nominees Announced Today; Faith Centered Music Association to Recognize Top LDS Musicians in June Awards Show
The Faith Centered Music Association announced the nominees for the 2002 PEARL Awards today. This year’s nominees include a broad mix of past winners and new artists in 22 categories. The gala awards show will be presented on June 14.
Leading the pack with 5 nominations each are PEARL Award winners Julie de Azevedo and Cherie Call, sharing nominations in 4 categories, including Female Vocalist, Songwriter, Contemporary Song and Contemporary Album of the Year. Newcomer David Tinney broke through with 4 nominations; also with 4 nominations each are Sam Cardon and instrumental folk ensemble Enoch Train. Jericho Road, who burst on the scene earlier this year with their boy band style and Top 40 sound, is nominated in three categories including New Artist of the Year.
Other artists nominated this year include David Tolk and Jenny Jordan Frogley (each with three nominations); Hilary Weeks, Lawrence Lowe, Christina England, Brett Raymond and Ryan Shupe & the Rubberband each have two nominations. Jenny Oaks Baker and Jenny Richards shared two nominations for their album American Tapestry, with Baker receiving an additional nomination for Instrumentalist of the Year.
Nominated albums include the soundtrack to the film The Other Side of Heaven and Light up the Land, a commemorative Olympic album featuring Gladys Knight, Brooks and Dunn and Shawn King.
Senator Orrin Hatch also picked up a nomination for his songwriting collaboration with Janice Kapp Perry on the album Heal Our Land.
The PEARL Awards are given annually by the Faith Centered Music Association. Since their inception in 1998, the awards have expanded to include new categories and are reaching a wider audience than ever. The awards program has been broadcast on KJZZ-TV in Utah since 1999.
