In North and South America, young adults are invited to gather locally to watch the live broadcast on Sunday, February 1, at 6:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time. In areas outside the Americas, the rebroadcast will be available on Sunday, February 8, during the afternoon and evening.
Institutes of Religion: 100 Years of Christ-Centered Discipleship
Young adults across the globe are coming together in historic numbers to study the teachings of Jesus Christ, form lasting friendships and experience a sense of belonging as Institutes of Religion — a program of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2026.
For a century, institute has provided young adults opportunities to strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ, better understand their divine worth and connect with peers united by shared devotion to the Savior. What began in 1926 with one small institute near the University of Idaho in Moscow has grown into a global effort spanning more than 2,700 locations across over 170 countries.
The centennial will be observed during the Worldwide Devotional for Young Adults on February 1, 2026, broadcast from the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Following the devotional, young adults will be invited to participate in activities on Temple Square. Institute groups worldwide will also gather locally to view the devotional and recognize the milestone as the broadcast becomes available in their regions.
A Legacy of Discipleship
Institute’s origins trace back to the 1920s near the University of Idaho, where a dedicated building was constructed and J. Wyley Sessions was appointed to provide religious instruction for college-age students. From those early efforts, Church leaders increasingly recognized the need to support young adults during critical periods of spiritual growth, education and life decision-making.
As the Church expanded internationally in the mid-20th century, institute grew alongside it. Under the leadership of Church Educational System administrators — including Neal A. Maxwell, Henry B. Eyring and Jeffrey R. Holland — institute refined its curriculum, strengthened doctrinal consistency and established a unified approach to religious education across cultures and continents.
In more recent years, initiatives such as Innovate Institute, launched in the mid-2010s, have refreshed teaching methods and learning environments while preserving institute’s core focus on inspired instruction, meaningful scripture study and a deepening relationship with Jesus Christ.
Unprecedented Growth Among Young Adults
Participation in institute has surged in recent years. Over the past two years alone, enrollment has increased by more than 100,000 students, bringing worldwide participation to approximately 457,000 young adults — a growth of nearly 30%. Many participants are actively inviting friends, resulting in more than 35,000 students from other faith backgrounds enrolling in institute classes.
Combined with seminary, institute is nearing a historic benchmark of one million youth and young adults engaged in Church-sponsored religious education — one of the largest populations of religiously educated students in the world.
Be ONE in a Million
If current trends continue, combined seminary and institute enrollment will reach one million during institute’s centennial year. Leaders, teachers and students extend an invitation to young adults everywhere to “Be ONE in a Million” by joining a worldwide community centered on Jesus Christ.
Institute gatherings take place near universities, in local meetinghouses and online, connecting young adults across cultures, countries and time zones. Whether preparing for missionary service, beginning a career, newly married or navigating other life transitions, young adults can find connection, support and spiritual strength.
There is a place for everyone — those renewing their activity, those seeking answers, those steady in faith and those just beginning to learn about the Savior and His restored gospel.
Looking Forward
Institute today is adaptable, accessible and welcoming. Expanded course offerings, updated gathering spaces and enhanced digital resources — including scripture study tools and curriculum aligned with the Church’s annual Come, Follow Me focus — support Christ-centered, learner-driven, scripture-based education worldwide.
As Institutes of Religion enters its second century, the invitation remains unchanged from that first classroom in Moscow: Come together, learn of Jesus Christ, build faith-filled friendships, and discover the joy and purpose found in His gospel.
