One of the most profound and essential truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ, as restored through The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is the assurance that God, our Heavenly Father, loves each of us individually and perfectly. In a world where suffering, confusion, and doubt often cloud our vision, many may sincerely ask, How do I know God loves me? The answer is both deeply personal and broadly manifest—it is written in the scriptures, taught by living prophets, demonstrated in the Plan of Salvation, and confirmed through the quiet whisperings of the Holy Ghost.

The scriptures abound with testimonies of God’s love. The Savior Himself declared in John 3:16, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son. John 3:16

This is perhaps the clearest evidence of divine love: God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to atone for our sins and make eternal life possible. In the Book of Mormon 1 Nephi 11:17, Nephi boldly proclaims, I know that [God] loveth his children; nevertheless, I do not know the meaning of all things. Nephi’s statement acknowledges that while we may not always understand life’s circumstances, we can anchor ourselves in the sure knowledge of God’s love.

Furthermore, the very structure of the Plan of Salvation is an undeniable expression of God’s love. He sent us to earth to gain bodies, experience agency, and learn by our own choices, all with the goal of returning to His presence. President Dieter F. Uchtdorf beautifully taught, We are the literal spirit children of our loving Heavenly Father, and He desires to bless us with all that He has. God’s plan is not to punish or condemn but to exalt and save His children. This divine purpose is rooted in love.

Beyond the grand doctrines, God’s love can also be known in profoundly personal ways. In Moroni 7:48, we are invited to pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this love. Through sincere prayer, study, and pondering, we can receive a spiritual confirmation of God’s love for us individually. The Holy Ghost is a constant witness of this love, bringing feelings of peace, comfort, and belonging. President Russell M. Nelson has frequently reminded members to seek and expect personal revelation, which often includes a direct, sacred witness that we are known and cherished by our Heavenly Father.

God’s love is also reflected in the everyday moments of life. The beauty of the earth, the kindness of others, the tender mercies that guide and protect us—all testify that God is mindful of us. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland once said, Some blessings come soon, some come late, and some don’t come until heaven; but for those who embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ, they come. The very existence of such blessings, even amid trials, is a quiet but consistent reminder of divine love.

Some may struggle to feel God’s love, especially during periods of hardship. However, trials should not be seen as evidence of abandonment but an often necessary part of growth and progression. As taught in Doctrine and Covenants 122:7, all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good. As in John 14:18, the Lord assures us that He will not leave us comfortless. His love sustains us through sorrow and sanctifies our suffering.

Ultimately, the greatest evidence of God’s love is the Atonement of Jesus Christ. In Alma 7:11–13, we learn the Savior took upon Himself not just our sins, but also our pains, sicknesses, and afflictions. He understands us perfectly because He has experienced our individual struggles. Elder Holland emphasized, However late you think you are, however many chances you think you have missed, however far from home and family and God you feel you have traveled, I testify that you have not traveled beyond the reach of divine love.

How do I know God loves me? The answer is all around us and within us. It is written in scripture, woven into the Plan of Salvation, felt through the Holy Ghost, seen in daily blessings, and ultimately revealed in the life, ministry, and infinite atonement of Jesus Christ. Though life’s challenges may at times obscure our view, God’s love is constant and unchanging. As we seek Him, trust His plan, and open our hearts to personal revelation, we will come to know—deeply and undeniably—that we are cherished sons and daughters of a perfectly loving Father in Heaven.
