Lorenzo Dow Young is my 2nd Great-Grandfather with his 4th wife Johanna Larson. I also have a copy of The Utah Historical Quarterly - Vol. XIV, which includes journal entries and accounts about Lorenzo Dow. Many very interesting stories of a humble man contently living in the shadow of his older brother B.Y. Only comment on the story is that maple sap does not come out of the tree as a brown syrup. It comes out looking more like water, clear and runny. It takes roughly 60 -80 gallons of sap to make a gallon of syrup. I served my mission in upstate New York and Vermont. Very good narrative otherwise.

Lorenzo Dow Young is my Great-Grandfather and the account of the robin soup is in The Utah Historical Quarterly - Vol. XIV, which contains journals and accounts about Lorenzo, and the story has always been a favorite of mine. I have heard it told other times and it's never been quite correct, always some little addition or deletion that changes the story. Your account is a joy to read. It is perfect. And it so perfectly captures the feeling that the two brothers had. Thank you for this delightful version of an incident in the life of Brigham and Lorenzo.

Thank you Ted. This is a wonderful (and emotional) story. It also provides good training for the things we will likely face in the future when the tribulations spoken of in the scriptures are in full swing. We will all be required to exercise great faith, grit and the ability to dig deep in order to survive, just like Brigham and Dow.

I enjoyed your fleshed-out version of this brief account. Thanks.
