There is a difference between giving thanks IN all things (feeling gratitude and trust even in difficult times) and giving thanks FOR all things. I'm not convinced that the Lord expects us to be grateful for all painful events and circumstances. In those times, we can exercise faith and trust in His promises. In retrospect, we can be grateful for His sustaining love and atoning power that enabled to survive and grow from the times of pain in our lives.

I enjoyed your article. It brought to mind a time when My husband and I found ourselves drowning in financial problems and facing bankruptcy. One day I knelt in my office and gave thanks for what was happening because it was humbling us and making us realize all the blessings we had that were not related to money. Yes, I had to leave my house and become a working mother, and yes were venturing out in an unknown field of work, but I knew the Lord loved us and he would be there helping us each day.
