Interesting that Joseph said he supported the Whigs. Who were the Whigs. At this time in British politics there the Whigs (Liberal) and Tories (Conservative). In the U.S. the Liberals were the Republican and the Whig Parties. The Democrats were the Conservative parties. The Whigs were the more Liberal and most opposed to slavery of the parties and latter united under the Republican banner.
