Perspective is everything when it comes to tribulations. We need sufficient humility to trust the Lord's perspective on pain and suffering. I remember thinking a number of times as a teen that my (truly loving) parents were horribly unfair about certain matters. How different similar matters look to me as I deal with my own teenage children!
Mother Theresa famously said, "In light of heaven, the worst suffering on earth, a life full of the most atrocious tortures on earth, will be seen to be no more serious than one night in an inconvenient hotel."
While this is undoubtedly true, the anguish we experience in the midst of severe trials is very real in the here and now. Thankfully, we have a God, even Jesus Christ who longingly walks with us, endures our anguish with us, and ensures that we are not required to endure one iota more than will be for our best eternal good.

The question "why do bad things happen to good people" is the single most challenging question in the history of religion. And religion has never had particularly compelling answers. To the pretty standard answer, "we're here to be tested by and to learn from mortal existence," is this additional and difficult question: But why couldn't an all-powerful God set it up so that at least small children and other innocents don't suffer terribly? The real answer -- we just don't know.
