Stephen Bird, Sorry about that! The Book is "Discussing Same Sex Marriage" by Jon Corvino and Maggie Gallagher. It's a fascinating, but very specific, very non fiction read. Maggie's other Book, "The Abolition of Marriage" is excellent as well. It's a page turner that will have you in tears every chapter. Non-fiction doesn't usually do that. IF you like foot notes, you'll love both of these :)

Maryann, I suppose in some ways God will decide. But at the same time God calls this a probationary state and he has given us the free will to succeed or fail; I agree 100% we can't do it without righteous men! That was sort of my point in writing this: Women have the power to CHOOSE the caliber of men that will be in a child's life, and that's the biggest determinant in a child's future. But the sad truth is, men do not have power to influence their children's lives unless women make that possible through marriage. Only 10 % of American women are making the choice to delay child bearing until after marriage. This was a mother's Day piece that highlighted the power women have that is unique to them, and has power to correct this trend. Perhaps you will like my Father's day piece better. Wouldn't it be great if we had a "Marriage Day" so we could talk about the whole picture!

Lynda, I apologize, You are right, that was a glaring error. That paragraph was meant to be cut from the article because it did need work editorially. But in general "the two parent lifestyle" allows fathers to monitor mothers behavior as well as the other way around. The point is that women decide whether children will have that monitoring irrelevant to the gender. That setting is where abuse rates are the lowest. But I would point out, that as far as adult abuse goes, it is nearly impossible to entrap men into systemic abuse, in the way that women and children can be trapped in abuse. Unlike women and children, Adult men have the option to leave and provide for themselves.

Great Article. In #4, this sentence seems to be missing a phrase: "In contrast, children that do not receive this care often robotically pursuing the most immediate personal gain." What is it?

Do I really need to say it? Only God will decide the fate of civilization. Women TOGETHER with men will make choices that will have consequences for our future. While the importance of the role that women play in shaping and strengthening family and society cannot be overemphasized, we will NOT do it without righteous men. That is not God's plan.

Thank you! What wonderful things we need to teach our children. Women are incredible! Perfect? No. Powerful? Yes. I love, love, love the point about her negotiating power. Awesome article! Happy Mother's Day!J

These are wonderful insights into the powerful roles women play. Another witness that The Proclamation on the Family is true. Thank you for this useful article.

"Most importantly, the two parent lifestyle allows the mother to monitor the father’s behavior and call in authorities in the rare setting that a biological parent becomes abusive. In such a case a women is often the only way that children have a way to escape abusive men." Please stop associating only men to abuse---there are plenty of women/wives/mothers who abuse their children, also, and it's up to the father to rescue them. As ward/stake singles rep for the 30+ group for 8 years, I saw plenty of this going on. Opened my eyes to reality, and began reaching out to the LDS men to give them support as well.
