Thank you for your well thought out article. It is good to know that animals can benefit from a healthy plant-baed diet just like people can.

Thank you for your article. Having an autoimmune disease today means being confronted by many who believe you need to go Paleo or something similar in order to control it or even "cure" it. I had a doctor who felt the same way, and even when a gluten fast concluded that I was better off consuming the whole grains I had been accustomed to using every day, she told me that the studies today suggest otherwise and that I should not eat wheat at all. I politely disagreed, and we went our separate ways. After this I was confused. And although it might not seem like a big deal to some, for me it was emotionally trying. I went home and studied the Word of Wisdom, as well as the story of Daniel. I felt very strongly afterwards, more than I have ever felt before, that I should abide by the Word of Wisdom and that the blessings of health and well-being promised in it would be granted to me. I still have an autoimmune disease. However, I feel very certain that because of my adherence to these precepts, I have not had to deal with most of the symptoms and issues that many with my illness have to struggle with.

Great work! Let’s be daring and bring some baring to the meaning of SPARING: “Using frugally, Scarce, Scanty, Saving; parsimonious” (Webster's Dictionary, 1828.) “Sparing stresses abstention and restraint; marked by or practicing careful restraint; Meager, Bare” (Merriam Webster, 2016.)

I wonder how the Lord feels about GMO and Hybrid foods? God commanded even the plants to multiple and produce seed after thir own kind, "And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good." GMO and Hybrid plants can't keep the commandments. I wonder how He feels about us consuming so much of them. They even threaten the existence of God created airlom varieties. It's my opinion we should avoid them if we can.

When he talks about the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, is it possible that he is referring to wild animals, and it is these that we are to eat sparingly?

Wonderfully enlightening article! When I read about the inhumane and irresponsible methods widely used to provide us with meat, eggs, and dairy, I'm reminded of the infamous secret combinations who glory in their greed and wickedness "that [they] may murder and get gain".

Thank you for your inspired and commonsense approach. I also believe that to eat "meat" sparingly means to not over eat. And, my Magic Mill grinder has been working since 1976 on a very regular basis with no repairs needed. It has been a blessing to us and our neighbors.

Thank you for a reasonable opinion.

Thanks for the article. It is interesting that roughly 75% of the world's population is lactose intolerant, unable to properly digest dairy. Obviously, dairy is not a healthful food to the majority of God's children. Perhaps that is one reason He does not ordain it for any use in D&C 89. Whole food, plant-based experts report they see the MOST improvements in people when they give up dairy. While there is lots of scientific data to back this up, there is no need to do a lot of research to see if this will benefit you. You can give up dairy for at least a week, better yet a full month, to see if you feel better! Here are some thoughts on dairy and eggs and the Word of Wisdom: https://docs.google.com/document/d/12d7z3QkKQUVBLrIEY5jxIhkiUjVJwxiJTmaip2CpGIw/edit

Brother Millett, I too served in Colombia under President Calvert and returned home in 1972 with some digestive issues. I continued to eat the standard American diet up until four years ago when I saw the documentary "Forks Over Knives" and decided to follow its recommendations. I need to take issue with one of your comments about general authorities statements about the Word of Wisdom and have included a link about many general authority statements over the years about the eating of animals. The current research is also overwhelming. Since I have changed my diet I feel literally at least 20 years younger and all my health issues have disappeared. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXGXodVrYsA&sns=fb
