As a former legislator in Arizona for 8 years I have heard the statement " You can't legislate morality" Whoever said that you could legislate morality is wrong. HOWEVER -Just like the ten commandments and other standards set forth in legislation both Federal and State you can do just that - set a high standard with the hope and expectation that Parents and others closely associated with children teach "HOW" to live the standard. Oh and how about this- there area few proven Character Development curriculums used in many schools across this country that do teach how to live and apply Character Attributes such as forgiveness, truthfulness, diligence, obedience and endurance. With these tools not only does the behavior and self portrait of students improve but it gives parents more tools to use and apply in the home. I know this to be true. .David Petersen

Your son was right. Back in the 50's my non-member father (I am an adult convert) used to say, "You can't legislate behavior," in reference to civil rights. Being a child at the time, we didn't discuss it, but I heard him repeat it many times as government has tried to deal with people problems. Basically, his solution was to take them (racists, hippies, druggies, etc.) and let them wander in the wilderness until that generation was gone. Much easier than changing hearts -- but not as valuable!
