Minor Details-New Teen Flick from LDS Filmmakers
by Kjirstin Youngberg

Minor Details is a fun mystery movie made by LDS filmmakers that tells the story of four girls who live at a boarding school. At first there’s tension between a couple of the new girls, but when a suspicious note is left on a bulletin board, the girls decide to join forces to solve the mystery.  The movie is now complete and released nationwide on DVD.

“Cheerleaders are Ick, and they’re going to get sick…” So starts the mystery of what is going on at the exclusive Danforth Academy, an upscale boarding school where Claire and Taylor join forces to discover the truth. Are the mean girls to blame, or perhaps the nutty professor? Could it be the handsome coach, or one of the meddlesome boys? This film is packed with adventure and fun for the ‘tween set, and is a great family-friendly movie to keep in your permanent collection.

Like most movies, Minor Details started as an idea. It blossomed when Annie Edwards and Sally Meyer dug in with all they had to actually write a script, find a director and financing, and do all it took to get the movie filmed.

In their own words ….

Writing the script was a lot more work than either of us envisioned, but after many many drafts, and sleepless nights, we finished it. We presented the idea and script to veteran filmmaker John Lyde.  He took a chance on the us and said, ‘Sure, let’s do it’.

With John on board, there were no more excuses. We rolled up our sleeves and found investors who were willing to believe in our idea.  If we thought scriptwriting was difficult, finding investors took us to a whole different degree of difficulty.  There were many times we thought, ‘Are we nuts?’  Only because we had our goal firmly set in our mind, did we keep going.

When the budget was secured (and not all was secured before we went into production, talk about a wing and a prayer!) we set the month of June for principal photography.

What can you say about shooting a movie with a whole bunch of teenagers during a long hot summer?  It was crazy? It was amazing?  It was really, really hard work?  All of the above, but was it worth it?

On a bright sunny June day in 2008, the shooting started. A whole bunch of teenagers, extras and a wonderful crew, gathered to begin production. The cast immediately developed a deep bond.  Some had worked together in other projects, but many of them met for the first time on set.  Jennette McCurdy from the hit series iCarly came to work for six days.  It was so exciting for many many of the cast to meet her.  As an LDS actress she has always upheld her standards, which is unusual in Hollywood.  She was so gracious to the extras and went out of her way to sign autographs and take pictures!

It was a day we will remember for a very long time.  It’s like Christmas morning, you’ve waited so long for Santa to come, and then you wake up and wow…it happened.

A good many of the filmmakers are LDS, and committed to making wholesome family type entertainment. The cast of the lead girls all are LDS and also wanted to be involved in a movie that allowed them to showcase their talents, while allowing them to keep their standards.

The actual shooting of the movie was smooth sailing. With John Lyde at the helm, there really wasn’t a lot to worry about production-wise.  If you ever want to make a movie, call him!  He’s amazing.

We spent our days wrangling extras, calling local companies to donate lunch, dinner and whatever else those generous people would help us with.  We were craft services, script supervisors, moms to our two daughters who played two of the leads, head cooks and …. no…I don’t think we washed any bottles.

We got lots of support from the community.  One company ‘Fat Boy’  who makes delicious ice cream sandwiches, donated a freezer and kept it stocked with Fat Boy’s the whole week.  The extras were in heaven.  That was so appreciated!  We were able to eat well on a very low budget, with donations of burgers, sandwiches, tortillas and well.. the list was endless.

The cast includes LDS actors Kelsey Edwards (Bracelet of Bourdeaux)  Caitlin E.J. Meyer (You’re So Cupid. A Pioneer Miracle)  Danielle Chuchran (Saving Sarah Cain)  Lauren Faber (Liken the Scriptures series) Emma Duke, (Because of Charlie)  Jennette McCurdy (iCarly) Brady Edwards (As the Bell Rings) and Elijah Thomas (Scout Camp).

Other members of the teen cast in the movie include Savannah Jayde Gipson (Big Time Rush)  Andrew Cottrill (The Last Eagle Scout) and Elijah Thomas (Scout Camp).

Making Minor Details started as a labor of love, that we wanted to create for our daughters, who wanted to make a wholesome movie that members of the church (especially tween girls) could watch and enjoy. A movie that shows girls working together to solve a problem.  It ended in so much more, as friendships were forged and a feeling of accomplishment was felt within everyone who worked on it.

We would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Team Meyer/Edwards is currently writing a book series based upon the characters they developed for the film.

Just want the makers of this movie to know all the production was worth it. Saw a part of it long ago and here I am in 2025 seeing the full movie. It's a really great and lovely one!
