Food is an exciting thing for kids, and young kids will like these fun ways to prepare their summer food.

Here are some super treats for kids. They’re easy to make and fun to eat, and your kids will love the opportunity to work with you to prepare the foods.

  1. Ice cream cones: Serve potato or gelatin salad in an ice-cream cone. Cones make salad a treat to eat, and children can eat it more easily.
  2. Hard-roll sandwich: Hollow out the center of a hard roll. Fill roll with chicken, egg or tuna salad filling. Sandwich can be eaten without filling oozing out.
  3. Make food spill proof: Instead of serving tacos with loose meat that spills out of its shell, cook ground beef in a log-shape roll. Wrap meat in lettuce leaf and a thin slice of cheese. Slip rolled-up food into the taco shell. Larger piece keeps food from spilling on children’s clothing.
  4. Serve kid-size portions: Choose a small apple or orange. Or quarter a large apple and offer child one quarter at a time.
  5. Use pocket breads: Instead of separate bread slices for tuna or chicken sandwiches try pita bread. Add alfalfa or bean sprouts to give sandwiches added nutrition and crunch.
  6. Make sandwich faces: Make these open-faced sandwiches on bread or English-muffin halves.
    1. Peanutbutter sandwich with olive eyes, nut nose, tangerine ears and cheese-puff mouth.
    2. Hamburger patty with pickle ears, catsup nose, cheese tie, pepper eyebrows and olive eyes.
    3. Sloppy Joe with grated-cheese hair, olive eyes, green pepper mouth, and mushroom nose and ears.

Let the children use their imagination and come up with their favorite item to put on a sandwich. This is a fun way to have a creative moment with them and also a great way to get them involve in preparing their own food. Children will eat the food that they participate in making faster than they will eat what is put in front of them.

Have fun creating with kids. Don’t forget to take photo of the fun creations.
